Wheels evolved from sleds/sledges. Easier to pull things on a sled than on ground. Easier to pull things rolling over logs than ground. Put a sled on the logs and it starts wearing away at the contact point... eventually turns into a wheel

It's real, but it needs fresh wet snow, so even in places where snow is a regular "thing", it still depends on the local climate/chance. So for example, good chance to get it in Eastern Canada, but seldom has the conditions in the Prairies where it's mostly light/"dry" snow.

Yes, called a pinwheel or snow roller. They need a layer of heavy, wet snow on top of ice or powder to form. They can be a sign of dangerous avalanche conditions

Ah, I visit there quite a bit. My son went to WWU. Last year I had one of the best powder days at Mt Baker. It was thigh deep, fluffy and dry, but that's not usually the case.
