Is this really a "bombshell?" We already knew he was blackmailing journalists into using his platform. Turns out he has no problem with impersonating others so long as it benefits him. Cunt.
Penal Code 524 attempted extortion is “any person that attempts by any threat under Penal Code 519 to extort property or other consideration from somebody. It's punishable by county jail or state prison time for up to one year and a fine of up to $10,000, or by both fine and imprisonment.”
That's why he's throwing the baby fit, because he spread lies about them and they stopped using his shitty site. Now he's threatening them if they don't start posting again.
If NPR is not tweeting they are not providing any content or audience for Musk, so he doesn't need them. This is the cry of a manbaby that you will play the way they want or they will take their toys and go home.
NPR a should use their Twitter for regular but infrequent reporting on musky shenanigans and the awfulness of Twitter. Put one intern on the Twitter beat.
Then they need to very publicly and repeatedly distance from it. Cuz dormant handles can be reused. So far the standard for activity is logging in, but musky can change it to posting on a whim.
Sadly, even dumber is everyone who has the chance to(a surprisingly amount), yet doesn't lynch him. This man holds ungodly levels of influence on the world. Forget twitter, or Spacex, or tesla, his bank account alone is enough to sway the course of nations with a few 'donations'. Dozens of people come within braining with a chair distance of him daily and just tolerate his existence...
I think CEO’s are geniuses actually (not Musk), but also a genius of one thing is not genius of another. Their expertise is exploitation, harassment, and PR. Exclusively. We can do without such genius.
What's a billionaire? A moron who doesn't know how to spend money properly. What's a cool billionaire? An oxymoron who doesn't know how to spend money properly.
Depends on what you use Twitter for. If it's talking to your friends, Discord. If it's art/artists, Patreon or Newgrounds. If it's memes and topical humor, Reddit. If it's aggregated alerts from schools and businesses, RSS or just make a dedicated email account. If all you need is 160 characters worth of tantrums, YouTube has a Shorts section. (I don't actually know what people USE Twitter for, honestly - ask nine people, get ten answers.)
There's no such thing as verification anymore, aside from them verifying you have $8. Check marks don't mean anything anymore, you have to know the person's real Twitter ID to spot the many subtle fakes these days.
and now they're just automatically verifying anyone with enough followers so that you can't do that or risk blocking people you actually like. it's such a scummy shitshow
I've dropped twitter about eight years ago, but kept a spoonerism bot running, that I fed irregularly. Now I'm starting a career in science and oh boy, there's pressure to be there, to follow scientists involved in similar research.
Yeah, it can be. Easily and regularly, but that's because people suck and try to make it what it isn't. It should be a place to hang out with friends, not a soapbox to spout stupid shit (especially muhfking bullshit with no proof) but here we are in one of the worst timelines.
People will always use Twitter. I personally need it for my business, as much as I hate it. However much of a cunt Musk is, social media is vital to many businesses
I used it basically every day for 14 years. I haven't been on in 6 months now. I literally remember using TracFone minutes to check Twitter and separately driving around in remote areas trying to get a signal to load tweets to read by the campfire. I was an addict. Elon cured me.
Let him reassign the NPR tag to another company/person. The real NPR then makes public the Twitrer NPR isn't the real NPR and that would only exacerbate and prove Twitter's and Musk's illegitimacy further proving what an irrelevant & useless shit show Musk really is.
Yeah but there's also an ocean of difference between the Fox cases and this hypothetical. One was a coordinated effort among dozens of executives, media personalities, producers, lawyers, and politicians. The other is one CEO being a baby. There's no way you can prove intent to defame by what is essentially just a threat to delete an account and change a handle.
Was a long-time lurker there, and I JUST deactivated/deleted my account, as the fact that some racist prick can have a literal racial slur as his handle was the first, and last straw, fuck twitter!
We all focus on the stupid memes and nonsense, but people around here forget that Twitter was, up until Musk took over, still the primary social network on the planet and a LOT of critical business, journalism, and political activism work was globally done there for YEARS. People judging the worth of the platform based on stupid behavior of random users is like someone judging Imgur based solely on the Russian GTA screenshots that got posted.
I never was on Twitter at all, until I discovered some writers on the topic of the UKR War on Threadreader App, which sources from Twitter. Now I have 12 specific people I check on daily, not in Twitter but on Threadreaderapp.com for the latest war reporting.
And MySpace lasted until a better alternative came along, at which point people started jumping ship in droves. As soon as that happens with Twitter, we'll see it happen there as well. But there is no such comparable alternative yet.
Dude every single replies thread there is just bluecheck-MAGAhat alt right pushed up to the top now. It’s like if all the worst GTA whatever here got pushed up to the top.
Yeah, but the point is people are still trying to keep those things working BELOW that sea of Russian screenshots because it's critical to a lot of actual viable things and for a lot of actual serious people. There is no actual alternative to it out there yet, in terms of either scope of use, so telling people to just 'stop' is silly.
That was once true for Myspace too. Twitter is a zombie corpse now, more Dead Snow than Night of the Living Deb. People trying to keep it viable are delaying the inevitable and rewarding the insufferable. They are doing harm in the misguided belief that there's still a glimmer of good they remember flickering in the dead eyes. Time to bury the undead: the stink is oppressive and it is poisoning our water. The sooner the better.
Every impression you give to Twitter right now gives money to fascists. Any use of Twitter is unethical at this point. I can forgive business and artists and such that still have to promote there, but if that is not currently you, and you are currently using Twitter, then stop. Any justification is just mental gymnastics. I would also like to point out that you would think that NPR falls into that former category, but they’re doing the right thing and so can you.
Also, NPR stopped POSTING on Twitter, they didn't stop USING it. They still have their accounts and use them to follow others -- which is why Musk's above threat is so reprehensible, as he's threatening to give away active accounts NOT because they aren't being used, but because they're not posting.
You do realize that "I understand that some users HAVE to use Twitter to reach people, but all those people that they are trying to reach should just leave Twitter" is an inherently contradictory statement, yes? Look, I don't disagree with you that it's a terrible situation any way you look at it. But until we actually get something to replace it, you can't expect people who need to use it to just abandon it in the meantime with no viable alternative. Trust me, we've ALL got accounts on all >
"If your solution involves a step which goes 'if everyone would just do x' and 'everyone' simply won't just go and do that on their own, then what you have is not a solution, but rather wishful thinking."
By now, the only people dumb enough to get scammed by a blue checkmark are coincidently not the people who would leave twitter over blue checkmatk scamming.
At the scale in question, you don't need everyone, you need a critical mass to make it less socially acceptable and less viable as a business. Like cigarettes.
