You are 12. It's summer vacation. There's no such thing as a microcomputer. You're camping, fishing, and hiking in the woods all day...

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Then I turned 13, and started learning BASIC on a TRS80 Model 1...

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

RuneScape for me. I remember summer of 2002/2003, transitioning from 8th grade to high school. Would play until 4am, then wake up at 7am

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As an adult, I wish I had that energy again. I will never wake up early on purpose unless I have to.

Mechwarrior 4 or crimson sky

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh My Gods, got an almost painful nostalgia hit for Crimson Skies, that was the shit. Thanks for the memories :D

KIROV REPORTING

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I just finished a game of RA2 Yuri´s Revenge.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

GTA2 for me. Then came Morrowind.

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

OMG I got sucked into everything: Tiberian Sun, Yuri, Generals to the Red Alert 3 & lost at least 5 years of my life. Time well spent.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Age of Empires for me.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Same. C&C would just kick my ass.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Roegan?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Quake and Diablo 2. I miss those days.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Quake nd Q2 had some of the most memorable atmosphere/background noise. Really great sound design.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Make that a Red Alert 1 and we have a deal. :-)

4 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 2

Old school C&C all the way!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make that Z and we have an even bigger deal. It was the original red vs blue.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know they re-released (recently) RA and C&C in high def and with new soundtracks from the original artists. It’s incredible.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And who needed to be 12 years old ?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you weren't aware, red alert one got a remaster. Very playable on modern machines now

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Dungeon Keeper 2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I loved RA1, but Tiberian Dawn and Sun were my Jam... And Star trek elite force, operation flash point...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I feel like Tiberian Sun gets less appreciation than it should.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I see more appreciation for generals of all goddamn things

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a fan of Generals, too. But Tiberian Sun was so... atmospheric? But not at the expense of gameplay.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly nobody ever talks about C&C Renegade (The RTS) but it had MOBA-esque multiplayer elements and it was super cool.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ayyy. I love how utterly cheesy the game's SP was. C&C owns it's ham and cheese anyway, but Renegade went full tilt.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed Tiberian Sun

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Red Alert 1 and edited .ini files

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I thought I was the only one to have this as the main memory from that game

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Red Alert 1 and Star Craft 1 were my go to games

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Were you born in 1985?!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Close, 1983

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are dozens of us!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was quite literally my Christmas holidays in 1996. Hours and hours of Red Alert on my beige PC.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same here. Or some Troika Games (Fallout 1 & 2, Arcanum...).

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Microprose games were great... xcom and the likes.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Throw in some Bullfrog games, some SC2k and TTDX and you have a deal!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OG Mechcommander. So many hours of fun.

Found a collection of C&C on steam for ~$20 and knew if I bought it, all free time would go to it.

4 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

What is this? I cant find that from steam! At least not one with ra2.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the CNC anthology iirc

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That $20 bundle is... okay? About half the games are NOT plug and play- you have to do some .ini editing and dick around with emulator sett

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm looking to play generals with people. Hit me up!

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It doesn't work on Windows 10 for me :(

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Literally played a mission on the Generals Challenge not an hour ago. China Tank general so I can blitz with the ovahlooord

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Have you checked out the 'Rise of the Reds' mod yet?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait - there are multiplayer servers??? Where??????

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dot. Also there's openra.net

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. But I'm not sure if that works for C&C Generals.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes! Yes! I played that so much I started hearing the sounds from the game in real life. I dedicated to pull back my playing after that

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly when games were made by the people who were passionate about it and not money bags it was better, change my mind

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Westwood was a good company

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I understand games have higher budget especially AAA titles, but they feel empty and shallow.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

There were plenty of corporate cash grabs back then, and I would take anything out today over 100s of licensed movie games a year.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you are playing the wrong games then. Take a look at stuff like Dark Souls, the Mass Effect trilogy, hell, even DOTA 2.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's what people said when this was out. Comparing it to the mid-80s halcyon days where you could sell your own games at the local shop >

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

> on cassette or floppy in a ziploc. "Now it's just a bunch of Doom clones"

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There were bad games back then, too. We tend to pick our favorite games of an entire generation, and comparing them to EVERY game out.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

you're not wrong I kinda have the rose tinted goggles on, like Darksouls 3 is good but its the exception not the norm

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I look at it this way. Look at a game like BoTW and compare it to something like Magic Carpet. Objectively, BoTW is better.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stugeon's Law. 90% of everything is crap. Since the crap doesn't get passed on, we see it less and less the further in the past it is.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And when you start Red Alert 2, Red Alert 2 is what starts. Not Steam. Not Epic. Not Ubisoft Connect. Not Origin. Not Rockstar...

4 years ago | Likes 557 Dislikes 4

Steams alright. What sucks is when you click play game on a game in steam which opens another overlay like Origin or something.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

God I hate Origin. Slows down my game like mad but you can't close it w/o closing the game too. I bought it on Steam just let me use Steam!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Unit Ready

Hell march https://youtu.be/e3YzmjmAGoI

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you can finish it without buying extra content.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also when you bought the game you got the whole game. With an optional add on. No dlc required for chapter two.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can hear hell March already

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't hate the online stores, just the exclusives on them exclusives are bad for consumers period.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It still be like that today when we play games properly (pirated) click shortcut and game starts up with no "game launcher".

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For me, steam is fine, but I despise Ubisoft Connect, that shit needs to be put out of its misery.

4 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 0

Epic ia nice too, though less advanced. their free weekly/daily games make up for it though

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The games are nice but the shop is garbage, the library is garbage, the exclusivity is garbage.... yeah, only one redeeming factor

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love steam. Great to have your library all in one spot… I just wish it stopped there and everything was on their store.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

For me it’s Rockstar that loads once their game is launched. The client will lock the games if it can’t reach internet… and there games 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are primarily single player based. So if you don’t have internet for their key check, no game.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean you don't want to click yes to 7 of those windows security prompts just to open Uno?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Argument is moot when you consider you have to have the CD in the drive to play.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not really, that just ensured you had an legit version, pre NOCD cracks.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if I had a disc, I'd usually just throw a NOCD on there just to get rid of the hassle.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A DRM that stores licenses in the cloud is less of an intrusion and PITA than keeping cases of unscratched discs near a working DVD drive?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just bought RDR2 from Steam Sale. Forced to make Rockstar account. Instantly diminished my view of the game.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*points to a giant bottomless well* It's at the bottom of that.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

GOG.com. The launcher is optional.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Already there ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steamless. Just remove the DRM from your purchases if they are not multiplayer. I only run steam if I need to update or get something.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Has this annoying habit of slaving the independent installs to the launcher, though. But at least there's half an option...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get the sentiment but; When I click install game in Steam, it just downloads and installs, ready to play in 10-15 min. No 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

When you buy some games on steam and they force you to use Uplay or W/E in addition to steam to play the damn game. That annoys me, so much.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That's the games decision, not steam.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Steam was a textbook case of "we know it's basically a monopoly, but we don't care because the service is so good".

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

So, basically Netflix from 10-15 years back...?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

multi-disk installs ( ;) ), no cd-keys, no damaged disks... Don't use any of the others, but i am definitely a fan of Steam.

4 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

Fine!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But that was the way.... You had to be smart to be a kid installing a game back then.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 12

"Smart" You... had to follow a few simple directions I guess

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Pat your head, run your tummy, insert cd 2, goto page 12 of manual read last line

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

have..... have you met the general public...?
