This is so old that it was hanging on my instructor's wall at F44 in the 90s. Still makes me chuckle.

Never let this post die.
CocktailGaming
As long as I never see it with that title, I'll be happy to read it again.

@LikaaK I love this story. The book is also amazing

They can go all the way around the world in under 4 hours

Best plane ever

I love the Blackbird. It truly fascinates me.

i will never not read this story. never!

This story gets better as it ages.

Read that a dozen times. Still love it.

Send me pics of your cockpits ;)

Having fun in the Cockpit of an SR-71 - great pics too. Fantastic engineering in that machine.
CoeusDarksoul
So, fun fact I just found out just now: the world air-speed record is 40 years old today, set by the SR-71 in 1976! (Is also my Birthday :D)
ExploratoryDentalSurgery
Calling The SR 71an airplane doesn't do it justice- it is a breathtaking work of art
buddbilly
This is a much reposted post that I read each time.

+1 everytime.

All I want to do is say yes. Yes. A million times yes...

I read this same story on 4chan yesterday. I'm not saying they own the story or anything; just that you're getting your "content" from there

Always upvote the blackbird,The only plane to ever go so fast that it peeled the paint off of the future.

"All planes were forced to bow to the King of Speed" sent goosebumps down my wrists.

And I sometimes have trouble finding the air con button while at a red light

I think it needs just a few more gauges.

Sometimes I miss the old analog cockpits. Such a cluster fuck of switches.

For some reason, all I can think of is this car: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/10515633/top_gear_s19_e5_retiree_retrofit/

It's from "Sled Driver: Flying the Worlds Fastest Jet" by Brian Shul

I will always upvote this.
WhyIsMyNameFloridaThatsTheNameOfAState
Anyone know where I could get a good replica of the SR-71 pilot's helmet? I've always loved that entire ensemble.
wadenelson1
Real ones come up on Ebay now and then. Not cheap.
WhyIsMyNameFloridaThatsTheNameOfAState
Figured as much lol thanks
Vyrro
Fun fact-SR 71 fuel tanks leak like a sieve and they take off with just enough fuel to get them to a refueling plane. They fill up, speed up
Vyrro
And as the friction from the air heats up the plane, the seams are sealed and the bird is good to go.
Kirbysdad
Need a nickname for the Blackbird. Leaky titanium flying thingamabob.
Benjakenja72
vitaminRmademefat
More accurate that youd imagine though. It's actual nickname was the Weeping Blackbird because it leached fuel until it was at speed.
51CorgisInABar
Yup. It had to refuel in the air once it was off the ground, because in order to have the body adjust to the temperature it would fly at
51CorgisInABar
it would have gaps while on the ground.
vitaminRmademefat
Because they couldn't find a gasket material that would be flexible AND hold up to the extreme temperatures experienced at high speed.
Dukesofh
Best post ever! Repost or not. That's God mode!
BananaShip
They painted the SR-71 black so it can run faster. The black paint helps dissipate heat allowing it to fly at higher speeds.
Jjtazman
but...the red ones go faster
NotSoSubtleCallidusAssasin
Yuo see boyz, when yuo paint da trukk red, it goez 'fasta
GasBandit
Ya, dis be un-orky. Deyz jus muckin' about.
PirateRubberDuck
I thought it was to absorb radar so they can hide.
Geek13
They didn't have to hide. They just out flew everything.
MyLifeisaComplicatedDrinkingGame
This is true. It's defense against missiles was just to throttle down and literally outrun it.
PirateRubberDuck
That is awesome.
Benjakenja72
Shouldn't it be white? Since white reflexes more heat off of surfaces leading to cooler temps and less force from the heat
BananaShip
Good absorbers look dark (like black). But Good absorbers are also great at emitting energy.
BananaShip
Hence they use black to take all that heat and emit it back out as IR energy.
AttentionDeficitOohShiny
Lockheed head engineer (Kelly Johnson) thought so to until he did the math. Source: Skunk Works, Ben Rich.
Benjakenja72
Maybe you're right but I'm not actually sure
Frankasti
The problem is friction created by going fast in air. The heat generated has to be dissipated rather that reflected.
BananaShip
Light colors are poor absorbers hence you use it to reflect sunlight. In the case of a SR-71 most of the heat is coming from friction.
Benjakenja72
Makes sense yeah. I mean in the scheme of cars white is better but for something going speeds like that then black it is
BananaShip
Not directly related to speed. It's just that SR-71's generate so much heat that solar heating is insignificant.
BananaShip
For example thermal blankets are shiny because they are good reflectors. They keep you warm because they are bad at radiating heat.
DrSparken
Which colour you want depends which atmosphere you're in. In earth, particularly down at flight speed, you receive more heat from friction1/
DrSparken
does have a case. And I suppose technically I should say Mars entries, not reentries. 5/5
DrSparken
apply elsewhere in the solar system. On Mars reentries, because the gas is relatively cold, but the light produced by reentry relatively 3/
DrSparken
bright, it's actually better to use white - hence why animations of Curiosity's pod and such are white. So black is usually best but white4/
DrSparken
than from the heat emitted by hot air around you. This is why the SR-71 and the bottom of the shuttle are black. However! Your logic does 2/

I've seen it countless times and upvote it every time. Piss on the repost-Nazis.

I think SR-71 posts get a pass on reposts. Even Nazis love a great story and a beautiful plane.
