If I put my 4wd truck in low range and lock the diffs it disables abs. Which means I definitely have four wheel stop. Wouldn't recommend it.

I like to think this is more of a thinly veiled threat against Jan than a PSA

I've said it before. If you start to slide while breaking, don't slam on them, pump the brakes.
kookyabird
If you have ABS it's best to slam and let the vehicle sort it out. Pumps way faster and more accurately than a person does.
BungusAmungus
I love my awd manual subie in the snow. Nothing like engine braking to safely slow you down.
You know you can still slide with engine braking right?
Thanks Captain Obvious, what the fuck man. Like no shit its just another method to help slow down. Better than simply relying on ABS.

Ben1045
There's a strong notion that more driven wheels means more control. It almost only means less likely to get stuck. Tires give control.
But then maybe brake bias in winter could usually be better. Leaving it in the summer mode gives "safe" understeer, though.
DancingPanther
You also need to NOT BE FUCKING TIMID GOING UP HILLS BECAUSE YOUR ASS WILL MAKE OTHERS GET STUCK

Electric vehicles can use regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy back to electrical energy. Tesla and Prius do.
AShartInTheWind
They still have disks or drums.
Tippey764
All that is done through the drivetrain, those vehicles all still have conventional brakes. The pedal feel is simulated during regeneration
The. It switched to real feel when you reach max regeneration and start using the hydraulic brakes
PlatinumProductions
So do hybrids like the Ford Fusion.
Technically, any vehicle with electrical storage could use regenerative braking, but generally it's just hybrids and pure electrics.
ReheatedTacoBell
That’s not how driving on snow works, m8.
Really? On snow you don't need brakes? Guess I've been doing it wrong for 45 years.
...Did you not fully grasp NaughtButOne’s entire conversation thread? It’s right below my comment...
NaughtButOne
You can stop the wheel all you like. Momentum doesn't give a flying fuck if friction ain't around.
PyllyNalleMissionaries
ABS?
ABS is to help you maintain control during a panic brake. It actually reduces the effectiveness of the braking system.
Thisusernameisanillusion
That’s just false. ABS increases the breaking and stops the vehicle from sliding.
Actually it adds quite a bit of stopping power. Static friction is greater than sliding friction. But it's not going to add much in the snow
jbcars4life
It'll try to help on ice and it may indeed slow you down "faster" but you're still in for a bad time and some brown underwear
Not sure what you're saying, but friction is not the only way to dissipate kinetic energy. Look up "regenerative braking."
MrMattster
You still need friction between the tyres and the road - without that your regenerative braking does nothing
Do.. Do you know what braking is?
Yes. Do you? Still not sure why you think friction is the only form of braking technology.
jetah
i think they meant your wheels can be completely not moving but you'll still slide on the ice.
It doesn't matter how you stop the wheels. You will not brake unless your rubber has friction with the road.
MacClay
He's talking about friction between the tires and the road, which regenerative braking still requires.
Ahh. Got it. Well, if your car doesn't have four wheel stop because you're on ice.....you're going for a ride.
grumpy173

Weak sauce, we have a row of mailboxes that gets knocked down very first snow annually and a ditch that claims 3-10 cars a year ....
Maybe we have a problem now that I say it out loud.... does anyone have some salt we can borrow?
I feel like BMW and Audi don't make a vehicle big enough to warrant the title of "suburbitanks".
But that could be because I'm use to truck based SUVs, and crew cab trucks used as SUVs.
SecretImigurianLurkerAgent
