I’ve been watching this art YouTuber who exposes AI ”artists” and this is was one of her go to reasons, which I always found silly. lol
I want to learn EVERYTHING so I’m always trying new stuff. Plus it keeps me experimenting and not getting bored or burnt out :)

I see what you mean, but I feel your line work has a certain character to it that makes them seem related but not really the same? Like the way a musician can play multiple styles but still has a distinct sound because of the physical way they hold and play their instrument.

Yeah I heard the artist for the Anthrocon conbook cover got accused of using AI cause it was different from their normal style. But the real story is that they spent months practicing and developing that specific style for the conbook. Pretty shitty to get accused of that after all that hard work.

I tend to draw in different styles too. Some things and characters just look better in a certain style.

There is some similarity in stance, in my very non-artistic opinion. A red flag is not on its own proof, but it can still be a red flag.

The AI uncoverers already seem like witch hunters. i've seen them brutal on photos posted by women. That leg is too thick. No way the arm bends that way. People just want to feel smart and in control and will crawl over others to do it.

Mmm.. I see what you mean by different art... genres? maybe is the word? but I can definitely see the consistent STYLE choices you make, and I think that's your "real" style. These also do not have that tell-tale AI gross filter/uncanny valley thing happening, so unless you're REALLY GOOD at making AI not look AI, then I'd say you're fine!

What? I did a bunch of AI images for a project, and I stuck to one style just fine. I never called myself an artist, though, or pretended to have *made* anything.

Yeah, I had a friend in high school that would Do character portraits in our game club. And he could do a full body sketch in about 5 minutes, and either kind of Leiji Matsumoto Dragonball, or more of a Joe Kubert style. Then I saw some of his more serious work, and he was doing photorealistic pencil drawings.

I used to draw and sell art doing commissions for people in WoW and FFXIV, but never having a solid personal style got frustrating enough that I eventually just gave up. Most my art looked nothing alike and this was between 6 and 15 years ago. If someone tried to call my crap AI, I'd lose my absolute shit on them.

Alexander King (1899–1965) did work for a paper company's anniversary, & they asked if he knew anyone who could do a Chinese scene. He started out doing such in restaurants, so he did it under an assumed name, slightly different style. The company asked for more artists, & he did all the work as "other people."
Al Hirschfeld saw some of the work & asked King if he purposely painted it with his left hand or something.
Point: those who know art can see similarities despite different styles.

I think it's less of using different styles, and more using inconsistent styles in the same piece. Like two characters in the same place drawn ALMOST but not quite the same way.

That's fine. What I find worse is people who use "That's my style" as an excuse to stagnate. Just keep at it. With practice come consistency and that's where individual styles really start to emerge.

I think there's a grain of truth to their statement, but it's deeply misguided. Yes, AI slop makers do tend to have inconsistent style because even with prompting the models spit out results that "follow" certain artist's styles, and that CAN be a sign, but it's certainly not a definitive one. Real artists who work in different styles still show growth over time and connections in their talents between their different pieces.

And that unfortunately is true in general. Almost every "tell" for AI is a fine guideline, but not a guarantee.

Exactly, which is why we rely on a traceable history of work. If you come out of the gate with perfectly polished art ANY time in history, that's odd, but these days you definitely look like you're making it with AI, doubly so if you have a huge output very suddenly. Again, artists show growth and history, without exception - you can always see them improving even if they don't say it, and they tend to get faster with experience too. New artists are slow and flawed (positive).

People have an overinflated sense of their ability to distinguish between AI and not. I've seen people claim videos were AI that have been on YouTube for over a decade.

If someone started posting perfectly polished manga style for a couple of weeks with no other work history and then suddenly posted photorealism with not even a note about it, that would definitely raise red flags, but it's all the external signs that give it away. AI "artists" don't talk about their process, their skill development, they don't show growth and improvement because they literally can't.

I as a 2D and 3D artist do not talk to anyone about my art, style, process, etc. I work on it quietly in my own time and post it. Guess I'm fucked.

Do you have a social media account where you post hundreds of pieces in a matter of months? If not, then it's really not that suspicious. AI "artists" tend do dump pieces REALLY fast since they don't actually have to work on them for much time beyond re-writing a prompt, and that's if they even try to sign their pieces for attribution in the first place. Most sloppers just make stuff en masse and dump it on a social media account for clicks follows and ad revenue.

Even just posting a few pieces over the course of months or years, people who care can see improvements in technique, or at least evolution of style. You don't have to write a whole artist's statement for every piece, they speak for themselves.
