The "600,000 from China" comment doesn't ring so much as "we need skilled labour" as "we need lots of cheap labour because we chased off the 'illegal' labour we've been profiting off". That indentured-style labour was/is an essential part of the US economy, and while it's good they were taking steps to fix that issue I'd have preferred they just.. pay those people who were already there. Back to the 1880s import people from china thing I guess.

They already are. ICE is primarily targeting brown people, but most h1b holders are from Asian countries (China, Nepal, India, etc...). They typically come to the US on student visas and then get an h1b to stay and work in country. While the number of foreign students is decreasing, it's only down (less than) 1% from last year, which will have virtually no effect on the number of h1b applicants.

Plus there's a LOT of jobs that may have used an H1B visa to bring someone into the country but companies have started to just work with those people as independent contractors working remotely from their home country.
Why come to this shithole of a country and be subject to racism and maybe random deportation when you can just adjust your sleep schedule and work remotely? Especially if you already live in a place with a cheaper cost of living.

I've said it on here before. I am a very white Canadian and planned on taking a month off work next year to go walk the length of the Superior Hiking Trail. There is no way that's happening now. I have family members that were going to spend a few weeks traveling around the US visiting various ballparks and cities they haven't been to yet this last summer. That was cancelled too. *shrug*

I _think_ they meant that as an exclamation for emphasis before the real content of the sentence, "shit!", which would more traditionally be written with a comma afterward: "Shit, tourists are scared to come". I could be wrong, though.
