Tiny cars like this were more popular in postwar Europe. There was a whole category of microcars. My favorite is the Messerschmitt KR200 (yes the same company that made German fighter planes in WWII). It was effectively an enclosed scooter. You may have seen one of these being driven by Cousin Itt in The Adams Family movie from the 90s.

Yeah, I think the market died in the 60s as recovery took hold. Japan still has a market for tiny cars, Kei Cars. I think they were originally created for the same reason, but stuck around mostly due to tax and insurance incentives.

Not just that, but Japan has roughly half the population of the US crammed into a land mass the size of California. Space is at a premium, and many people don't have the room for a normal-sized car. If you want a car in a major city like Tokyo, you first have to prove you have somewhere to park it before you're allowed to buy it.

I've never wanted a large car (or a car at all for that matter as I've lived in Manhattan for the last 20+ years) but those little smart cars came out, I desperately wanted one! It seems so reasonable and efficient to get around a city. But I'm way too scared I would get crushed in an accident with all the huge cars people drive. Feels like a better idea for Europe.

Modern city cars are actually very strong and designed to help you survive crashes with larger vehicles, it's things like American "trucks" (oversized utes) that are absolute garbage in crashes. I'd rather be in a Toyota Yaris than a Dodge Ram 1500 in a crash.

Other than having more wheels, that's my Honda SuperCub. I love getting to cruise around town on it. As long as the errands don't need too much cargo, I have a great time. It even gets nearly 100 mpg. Filling up for under $5 makes me smile every time.

In ontario pickups are commercial. Don't need a "cdl" (a or d) because that's done by weight. Anything less than 4600kg is just a regular license (g).

In some states class C is regular passenger car. That threw me off too, cause I'm from NV originally and class C means 'yeah I guess you can probably drive anything not for hire'. Hell, until recently the NV class C covered those giant ass motorhomes the size of a tour bus. They finally pushed those into a non-commercial A/B(depending on weight), so at least there's that. But there is no D there and now that I've encountered D elsewhere it really should be a standard thing.
