Please consider fostering local animals while they are waiting to be adopted! Near me fostering is available through the Animal Care Centers of NYC (http://www.nycacc.org/foster.htm), and includes cats, dogs, and even rabbits. The ASPCA also has fostering around the county. It's a really great experience and helps the animals immensely.

If you want to adopt, I highly recommend foster animals. They usually come with lengthy descriptions about their personality from fosters

They come with less stress. That are in better health than if they were in the shelter. Its slightly less convenient though

My fosters never end up back in the shelter. And the ones we keep are the ones with disabilities. With the exception of our first litter

And my recent adoption of a fuzzy grey kitten because my cat fell in love with him. I couldn't take the kitten from him.
