If you don't look directly at them, you see their true forms. We already knew they weren't human, right?

I'm not exaggerating. This is worse than any horror game or film. I need a break now.

This is really upsetting. I feel like it's a portal to a John Carpenter movie.

I taught my students about this illusion in my perception class. It's pretty fantastic. Paper is here http://mbthompson.com/research/

Gestalt psychology explains this!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some of these are actually edited a bit

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Edited to have the eyes all in exactly the same place by the looks of it, which I'm assuming messes up your point of reference

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

They all look normal if you look at them frame by frame.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Thats what I did and they look like each image has been edited a tiny bit, eyes, ears or jaw

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doesn't look like anything to me

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Are you staring at the cross in the middle and photos are blinking by quickly?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its a westworld reference

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My bad

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What the actual fuck is going on with my brain

8 years ago | Likes 178 Dislikes 3

Never ceases to blow my mind...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 but faces are complicated AND these ones are a) doubled stimulus and b) moving fast so the guesswork is sloppy? *shrugs*

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I could take a guess: some things in your peripheral vision are just 'guesses' filled in by your brain since you can't actually see it 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Brain games, the TV show, explains this in one episode

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could be wrong here but I believe this illusion takes advantage of your blind spot. https://imgur.c">/YtKAmBW">https://imgur.com/YtKAmBW /XWWlQII

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

your eyes physically cannot see it so your brain makes a guess based on the surroundings, which is why the line appears continuous too.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that being said, this only works when you line it up perfectly and the gif above seems to work at any angle or distance.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry, you are wrong here. The blindspot is very small and you'd need more precision to find it. Good guess though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suspected as much. the blind spot only works at specific distances+angles but this works regardless.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What he fuck is wrong with you, me?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can use this trick to solve those 'spot the difference' puzzles. The differences will be 'shimmering'.

Researcher Sean Murphy discovered this illusion.

I dont get it. Nothing happens.????

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Try looking from 2 or 3 inches away so that images are in your peripheral vision. It works

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Their faces get distorted in your peripheral vision, but the images are actually normal. Brains are dumb.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Brain exaggerating change in the periphery is a defensive/survival measure. That's pretty smart, actually.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't see anything unexpected - just faces with less clarity of detail - so I'm really not sure where you're getting distortion.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

They started looking like aliens for me.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Are you on a phone? I think this works better on a bigger screen. Shit looked fucked up to me lol.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm on a desktop PC.

Fresh meat bbc series actually good as af iMO on Hulu

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As af... smh... I..i...i... don’t why know why

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't get it.

8 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 10

Our brains are not wired to take in that much visual acuity and make sense of it.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

They basically turn into aliens

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

so it’s not just me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

maybe it's their true form! *puts on foil hat*

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's a cognitive thing. The brain processes visual information by pattern recognition. When you're not focusing the brain only processes [1]

8 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 2

The most distinctive information causing the faces to come across as caricatures.

8 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 0

You get the same effect if you focus on one part of your face in a mirror (or a friend's face) in a dimly lit room. Everything starts 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2/2 changing and it's terrifying if it's your own face that it's happening to.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also does not distinguish between the first face and second face, tending to blend features instead of re-evaluating the new pattern.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's also because the eyes are all in the same place on the screen so your brain tries to compensate by adding the other features

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

This is why caricatures look more like a person than pictures of a person do. (Weird right?) Check out VS Ramachandran at UCSD.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Some of his work showcased here on TED : https://www.ted.com/talks/vilayanur_ramachandran_on_your_mind/up-next

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That was a great ted talk. Thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They are charicatures though. Even without staring at the cross.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You're right, there's some photoshopping going on towards the end if the cycle. Good eye.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Actually I'm not 100% sure now. I took a bunch of screens and they all look normal. It's just the rapid change that does it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i right clicked and hit show controls and walked through it a bit at a time and nothing looks ridiculous at a glance

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If ypu stare at the cross long enough the faces on the aide gets derpy

8 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 2

Some of them are already bit derpy

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

Not as derpy as my brain made them!

They look normal to me. I've covered both sides and they look normal if you look at them but equally fucked if looking at the cross

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't look altered to me? Some aren't the best photos of theses people for sure but not altered

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

omg you are right mofo's been foolin with me.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They all look normal if you look at them frame by frame. It's the change that fucks them up. (Apart from being faces that are in general >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

> pretty distinctive)
