I'm not a forward girl, but I've been intrigued by this guy for awhile. Worked up the courage to give him my number today after picking up the feeling he may be receptive to it. He was polite but not excited, so feeling a little bummed but also really freaking proud. I can be shy to a fault at times but I put myself out there and the world didn't end and I didn't become the butt of a cruel joke.
So this is a reminder for all y'all shy weirdos out there. It's okay to make a move and to strike out, you'll get the chance to grow and own your space. It's a pretty powerful feeling. Also real life is not a '90s teen movie and most people aren't bullies, they're not going to shame you for putting yourself out there.
TrustMeImmaDogtor
The most savage 90s bully, in my opinion:

Im still thinking my hot neigbour never found my little note....
ohwaitwassheagreatbigfatperson
I talked to a girl day in day out for 5 months on imgur. The very day after she saw what I look like she ghosted me.
ohwaitwassheagreatbigfatperson
And I didn't even want to date her. I just wanted to be friends.

He was probably too shy and awkward to accept it confidently.

@OP I've had a girl give me a number once and it was really nice. If nothing else, I'm sure he feels good you gave it to him.
CityCouncilmanJeremyJamm
You got it!

fuckstartmyheart
Had a girl give me her number at work yesterday, I was mindblown! Didn't have the heart to tell her I already have a lady
AliBarber
"polite but not excited" dude you're in. From a guys perspective, he's like "did this.. Really happen?"
adayaway
Ha! Probably not, but I do wish.
AliBarber
Did anything come from it? Cos seriously.. This stuff doesn't happen to guys. He was probably stoked
SlutAtNight
Maybe he would write his own socially awesome/awkward penguin: Got a cute girl's number/ OH SHIT I GOT A CUTE GIRL'S NUMBER NOW WHAT
TheManInTheWall
80% of the time, that guy will have acted like that out of a lack of knowledge on how to respond rather than him not liking you
PsycheClone
"She's probably just being nice and isn't really into me" guy probably
tilerd
I gave my number to an absurdly cute girl about a month and a half ago. Was so nervous I can't remember anything I said. She's my gf now :D
superduperyooperthatspissedoff
Confidence isn't knowing they'll say yes but knowing you'll be fine no matter the answer
AncientSeraph
I like that.
elcee50
OP is right, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Now excuse me while I go back to being an introverted nerd and ignore my own moral
Flyndaran
You avoid 100% of the failures when you don't try as well.

Did you just go Gretzky on her?
msbilliejean
No, he went Michael Scott on her.
elcee50
Should I have gone Claptrap from Borderlands on her instead?
JadawinUK
LOL. No, of course not.
nemobla
I never had any good experiences from asking for a number, fml im gonna die alone
drusillastrange
Don't worry. He will probably figure out you are into him in a couple of decades.
delta9eyes
Sounds like Topanga
ANewBadlyConstructedReplyEverytime
Yes, girl. Keep at it. Better to ask as many as you please. You have to wade through the "no's" to get the worthwhile "yes's".
Bongedagain
Best pick up line ive ever used. I have no reasin to talk to u but i want to so lets get lunch. Worked for me
BigIrishGuy
We're all a little weird anyway, aren't we? Perhaps he ws just shocked or didn't know how to reply. We dudes ain't great with being emotive

Keep doing it. The numbers I've got over the years has always been appreciated. Makes me smile for a while even tho I'm not interested.

+1 good girls
IHazAwoken
Agreed! Even when I not interested or I think the person is mega not my type I'm still fglattered and grateful. Smile is genuine
ChronoKing
"fglattered" sounds painful
IHazAwoken
Feels lovely
TroelsyTwo
I dunno. Usually give guys my number so I can figure out if I wanna date them. Usual friend talk, and I bring beers places so they like me.
msbilliejean
Any luck so far? I started (and ended) my last relationship *shrugs*
TroelsyTwo
I've not a problem landing men. I just get bored when they start taking me for granted. Rather just leave than force them to care.
msbilliejean
That is exactly the way I feel! If you have to force them to care or to make an effort, It's not a good sign from a BF in the dating stage
TroelsyTwo
I'm sure it's just as much a bf as gf issue. But it's like men don't care if you say there's a problem if you're not screaming and they /1
TroelsyTwo
still get sex. The guys I've found that do take notice have been too sensitive for me. I'm in limbo, can't win. lol
FusRoDa
I know your a lady and your new to this but personally when a lady shows strong interest it takes me a few hours of thinking to know if I am
ThisIsImpressive
ready to get a horse dildo shoved waaayyyy up my ass 2/2
Bambing
It would probably help if you weren't a sky rim shout
Mirawatts
I'm a guy and when a lady shows strong interest, like giving me her #, I instantly respect her even more. I know approaching is hard.
MechaNinja
Takes me a few years of thinking to realize she was.
ProBologna
My fiancé kept telling me we'd make a great couple for months until I finally figured out she wanted to date me and wasn't just joking.
ProBologna
I'm grateful every day that she didn't give up on my dumb ass.
MechaNinja
My now wife of 17 years says I initially scared her off by being too forward - I was overcompensating for being nervous and unsure :)
VonKripplespac
The woman I loved now has two kids and is married. I didn't realize she liked me till a year later.
PaigeTurner777
I told my one that got away that I was in love with him. When we were both single he never made a move so I thought he didn't reciprocate.
PaigeTurner777
I was too scared to make a move. Turns out he thought I was joking. We eventually grew apart. I still think about him every day.
VonKripplespac
I unfortunately have the problem of not reading women well. Takes me till I'm home to realize that somebody was hitting on me at the bar.
msbilliejean
You sound like a dude, would you prefer to get to know the girl before she makes a move or would you want to know her intent before 1/2
msbilliejean
Getting to know her. In short, to avoid "wasting time" on someone who wants more out of the relationship than you do 2/2
retgarr
Really gonna depend on the guy. I'd appreciate either way.
Mirawatts
Totally subjective, but personally I only like to talk to one person at a time. So I'd like the upfront honesty, followed by getting to know
MostlyCatFavorites
More of just be a little shocked, its not a daily occurance, in fact it has happened once to me
kinglysandus5
I am a dude. I am also unusually dense. I almost chased my wife off because I didn't get her signals due to my insecurities. (1)
kinglysandus5
Eventually she just levelled with me that she found me attractive and wanted to be with me. That was uncharacteristic for her, but it (2)
kinglysandus5
Worked. We have been married for 15 years and have our first baby on the way!
thesupersonic
I had an OkCupid account, and I noticed that after sending a 100 original messages, only 10 girls replied. Of the 10, I only met up with 1
thesupersonic
It bummed me out having so few replies, I just stopped.
Lamech777
Online dating was so frustrating, you want to put effort into a message but its almost always wasted.
TeamNoPieNoSledgehammer
I'll take your number. I keep texting this chick named Jenny at 8675308 but I get no response.
SlutAtNight
Ahhh a joke within a joke!
TeamNoPieNoSledgehammer
:-D yes I try. oh btw, its nighttime here...
SlutAtNight

Cause you got the wrong number, dummy! It's 867-5309
TeamNoPieNoSledgehammer

It's easier to land guys, don't worry there are 200 that want your number. Girls on the other hand are way harder to get numbers from.

Ehh not always, it's difficult for me with guys and even more difficult with girls (my gaydar's broken...)
ltsDizzyD
I have an issue where a girl I want to ask works someone. I don't like to make advances toward people who are working but... idk what to do.
bringbakfirefly
1. Slide under her desk.
ltsDizzyD
Somewhere*
timecookie
Just do it.
farthammet
Just be cautious, remember she's paid to be nice to you. If you leave your number you should be okay not going there for a while.
ltsDizzyD
Yeah, that's the thing. Maybe I've noticed more, or maybe I only want to notice more. Either way she's getting paid to be there and be nice
LittleKnownOne
Are you step 1? That is literally the only thing that matters. If step 1, then ask any way you want. If not, prepare for harassment suit.
ltsDizzyD
What's step 1?
livingonthemildside
Leave your number anyway
ltsDizzyD
Just give it to her? Tell her to to text if interested? I'm admittedly not keen on dating culture. The longer I'm single the worse it gets.
AncientSeraph
It's definitely not the worst strategy. And if she's not into you, at least she'll enjoy the compliment. That said, maybe try some smalltalk.
SanderTheStrange
Just to be safe, what IS the worst strategy? (other than not giving someone your number)
jtriplej
And if she doesn't text never return to that place of business.
ltsDizzyD
I'm a pretty shy person and I still disagree with this.

"I wonder if she was flirting with me" -That Guy
AdmiralPaws
Can confirm. My fiancé didn't pick up on my flirting for at least six weeks.
theshinobi23
3 years later: "Wait...she gave me her number to set up a date, not for an emergency contact. DAMMI, BRAIN!"
nikorasu87
Exactly! It helps a lot for girls to be easy BUT only for those first five seconds or so...gives room for us to make a move.

Don't understand why guys don't just ask for clarification if they're confused. It's better than not knowing.
DrewtanggaurdiumLeviosa
Because it doesn't occur to us until later that there was anything to be confused about.
MuayThaiKitty
Use the number. And ask.
SlackerTactical
You can't really be sure. Best to move states and change your name. --casually explained guy
backsidenasty
Some of us guys are pretty blind to this stuff. We literally need to be hit on the head sometimes.
lHaveAConfession
Fuck, I need to be hit just to know I'm having sex.
mentalproblemz
Sometimes....?
ZaWithDude
yep.. cause if you take it as flirt, and they aren't, too easily goes wrong for men. Aaaaand that's why we're all like that now I thinks.
MuayThaiKitty
You know you can ask, right?
ZaWithDude
That alone is means to get something to go wrong. So nah, won't ask. Branded a creep just thinking it might be is a no no for me.
PedanticGonkDroid
What, open my mouth and speak to another person?
VariousConditions
As a guy who just had a # given to him. That's absolutely fucking what I was/am thinking
MuayThaiKitty
CONTEXT IS KEY. When did she give you the number? Out of the blue or during a group project where you have to talk to eachother out of uni?
VariousConditions
Right after a yoga class lol
MuayThaiKitty
Way more likely to be flirting at that point. She knows you looked at her butt.
oldmanrye
Yeah. My crush gave me her number. Just wanted to send memes. Which I guess is the next best thing.
superbest
You've been meme-zoned
IntergalacticCinematic
Get some sex once in a while and you, sir, will be living the dream.
HeyOP
Wait til guys start rejecting you for just saying "hi" or "what'd you think of the band?"
creechville
That happens to me....i said hi to a guy once and he straight up said "no" and walked away. I couldn't help but laugh though. Shut down hard
Caliburn
Saw a girl at a bar looking down at the dance floor. I asked why she wasn't down there? She walked away. I had a gf, wasn't hitting on her.
HeyOP
She might have been rejecting the interaction entirely rather than rejecting perceived advances. Maybe that's worse, I dunno.
Meatstallion
Just a bitch dude.
Caliburn
That's the thing, she didn't scoff or make a face. She looked at me without an expression then walked away. It was weird.
Caliburn
Not a clue, it was really odd. Never had someone say nothing and just walk away before and haven't since then.
HeyOP
I'm certain I've done it to one or two people, and have had it happen to me. It was probably contexually appropriate once or twice, too.
HighPriestessofSoFrickingTired
Sometimes it's safer to stop a conversation before it starts. Or, she was a bitch.
HeyOP
1) Or she suffered from severe social anxiety and was trying to cope, but being directly addressed spooked her. Or some dude just
HeyOP
2) groped her as she waited for the bathroom and couldn't deal, or who the hell knows really. Or, she was just a bitch. But know knows.
Caliburn
That's my guess. She didn't scoff or make a face. She looked at me without an expression then walked away. It was weird.
