OK but seeing as you went with 3 varieties, how did the other pumpkins do this year? I've had years they grow like beach balls, and other seasons my yard has been overrun with sprawling vines and huge leaves only to end up with dozens of pumpkins no bigger than apples.

I don't want to talk about my squash this year lol. Let's just say I hate gophers and will no longer be planting any cucurbits in-ground and will only be planting them in my raised beds with hardware cloth on the bottom. I only got 2 watermelons, off of 6 plants that all had great starts. Zero cantaloupe off 2 plants. Zero pumpkins, after an amazing kabocha squash year last year I was looking forward to more squash. Zucchini and yellow squash got wrecked early too but I at least got a bunch.

That sounds like a rough year, but I guess at least you got something of a harvest. No gophers here but the squirrels, skunks, rabbits, and raccoons more than make up for it. Raised beds are a must. I've also found it somewhat helpful to place hot pepper plants randomly throughout. A bite of habanero tends to make some critters think twice about where they forage. And as a bonus they're great for cooking and hot sauces.

That's a great idea, I have my peppers all grouped together but next year I'll spread them around!
Thankfully I've still had plenty of other great harvests. Just rough for the long viney things. But easy to prevent in the future, unlike your pests which are crafty little buggers.

Indeed they are. Unfortunately the peppers do nothing to help the blossom end rot that cursed my tomatoes, or the blight that ripped through my zucchini in no time. Cucumbers did quite nice though.

Ugh it's always something. My tomatoes (and plenty of other things) always get wrecked my powdery mildew and fungal diseases, I've learned to just accept it and succession sow more things.
