Replace "Cable Giant Cable One" with any healthcare company and "community-funded broadband" with "universal healthcare"

have you got a workable plan for what to replace it with? If not, may I suggest Henry George's "Progress and Poverty"?

Back in the day I tried to set up a rural WiFi ISP because ADSL was years away. Just before we launched Big Telecom changed their plans.

Cable One spent YEARS if not decades making sure no competition existed in my area. IIRC they got in trouble for shady shit with easements.

We got fiber here but it nearly didn't happen because spectrum internet started a smear campaign the fiber is way better we switched.

Broadband Internet should be taxpayer-funded and government-operated. It should not be sold for profit.

Whoops! All capitalist pigs!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In normal country, such infrastructures are public and/or barred from monopolies.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

think about it: why does providing internet service keep getting more and more expensive is the infrastructure has already been constructed?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, not every building has internet yet, but a mass majority does, yet it gets more and more expensive....its theft

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They can do it by providing better service for a competitive price. Not holding my breath waiting for that to happen.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That sounds harder and more expensive than suppressing competition.

"overbuilds" Oh god fuck that asshole so much.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That word stood out the most to me as well- "If they are allowed to do that we will have to make an effort to compete, or leave the market!"

A bit tangential, but TechDirt is an amazing and underappreciated news resource.

The whole thing's publicly funded. They just started to pretend they own it and we just assumed they did. All they own is politicians who /

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

we the people let them start buying... rather recently. We change that back before we can't anymore.

I moved specifically to a city that runs their own fiber. It’s great

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This happened in NC when the City of Wilson created their own broadband network after telecoms refused to upgrade their own service to…

…attract new businesses. Lobbyists were successful in getting legislators to ban any future deployment of municipal-owned broadband.

Then the voters should burn Congress down and hang those legislators from the flag pole.

how will this address corruption? We have the death penalty but ppl still commit murders.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, it's anarchy then... or some form of authoritarianism?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Those would likely be our options if we don't put some thought into this.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Death is a FANTASIC deterrent for greed.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

we just get more greedy ppl, just like we get more murderers.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

We have fiber being set up in my apt community. No more Comcast!!!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We really should have fiber internet everywhere. I don't care if it is costly. Just get it done and we should be set for decades.

Whoops capitalism is fucking horseshit. Reject exploitation, embrace communism.

Democratic socialism*

I said what I meant

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

uhhh communism kinda sucked, what with Stalin and the rest of his crowd. Maybe we might want to put some more thought into this.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 11

Ok get this. Let's look at all the bad things Stalin did—and here's the brilliant bit—we don't put those things into our communist system.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Stalin's Communism should be thought of as similar to Putin's Capitalism.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

The Russian communist party kind of sucked, yes. But if you think the Soviets had a system where the workers owned the means of production

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

you are EXTREMELY misinformed. The soviet system, as described by Lenin himself, was State Capitalism.

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Balanced socialism? It might work if we're open to it.

I keep babbling about Henry George and his "Progress and Poverty" - ppl know about the Magna Carta but not so much about the Charter of -

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

the Forest. The former deals with nobles, the latter with the rights of "free tenants", to restrict the abuses of the "nobility". -

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We don't need to settle for pre-packaged options ("capitalism OR communism/socialism"). Worth putting some research and thought into this.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

At this point in time the internet should be like roads or healthcare... Except actually maintained...

3 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

I find your expectations to be a little high.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 19

I wish I was that high……

Just like all the people in government when they vote on things...
