Kitchen Nightmares - Where Are They Now? (UK - Season 1)

Season 1 - The Start of a Franchise

I've been a huge fan of Gordon Ramsay's since he first started airing Hell's Kitchen in the US. I've done a lot of research about the fates of the restaurants Ramsay has tried to save in Kitchen Nightmares, and thought imgur would enjoy my findings. I'll start with the first ever season, and if this post gets a lot of attention I'll keep going!
***If anyone from the local areas have any updates or corrections, feel free to let me know - I only know what I can find on the internet.

EDIT: Holy crap, my first ever post makes the front page??!! Wow, greatly underestimated the amount of interest this post would get. As promised, Season 2 of the UK version has already been posted - URL below. I guess this is the partwhere I request something - in lieu of the cliched request for boobies, send me something positive that gets you through the day - unless it is boobies. Then by all means send those.

S01E01 -  Bonaparte's (27-Apr-2004)

The pilot episode of Kitchen Nightmares was mired in controversy from the start, following the closure of Ramsay's signature restaurant Amaryllis in his hometown of Glasgow. The press argued that Ramsay did not have the credentials to save failing restaurants if he couldn't even keep his own from closing.

Sue - The Owner

Ramsay had his work cut out for him from the start. He found Sue, a clueless owner (the start of a familiar trend) and a young, equally clueless head chef (Tim) who couldn't even cook an omelette, going so far as to poison Ramsay with a tainted scallop dish. Ramsay implemented numerous changes, but the revisited portion of the episode showed that Tim had gone back to his unsanitary and incompetent ways.

Tim - The Aftermath

Tim was fired immediately after Ramsay's second visit, and since then his life has taken a downward spiral. He briefly worked in television before returning to the kitchen, but unfortunately has unable to keep a job in this field due to the notoriety from the episode. He was arrested twice in 2007 - once for a DUI, and again for assault. Recent reports show that he's working on changing his name and leaving England.

Sue - The Aftermath

The aftermath was even worse for Sue. The second revisited episode revealed that the restaurant had closed and that Sue was pressing charges against Ramsay, arguing that the show was staged and was responsible for the restaurant's failure. The case went to court and was dismissed due to lack of evidence, and Ramsay later won 75,000 pounds in a libel case against a local newspaper for continuing to print these allegations. Sue wound up homeless, jobless, and 400,000 pounds in debt due to the bankruptcy proceedings and legal fees, culminating in a 2006 DUI arrest. She has since completely disappeared from public view.

Bonaparte's Today

The restaurant was sold in 2006 and became Reflectionz restaurant, which was sold again in 2009 and turned into a pub named Dinero's Wine Bar. This remains open to this day.

S01E02 - The Glass House (04-May-2004)

This restaurant was actually one of Ramsay's few success stories. The owners and chefs continued to uphold Ramsay's standards and food menu. Chefs Iain and Claire actually left to work in one of Ramsay's restaurants, but left after just several weeks and took jobs elsewhere.

The Glass House Today

In 2014, after ten years of success the owners decided to sell the Glass House. It was reopened as the Fulling Mill, and so far reviews have been very good.

S01E03 - The Walnut Tree Inn (11-May-2004)

The revisited episode revealed that the restaurant did end up losing its Michelin star. The very talented chefs Stefano and Spencer left over owner Francesco's attitude and got jobs in various London restaurants. Ramsay warned Francesco that the restaurant would fail if he did not lower his prices, which he refused to do due to his belief that the Welsh locals did not deserve to eat in his restaurant.

The Walnut Tree Inn Today

The restaurant did indeed end up closing in 2007. However, the new owners reopened it with the same name and used the episode to their advantage, cashing in on the publicity and upholding Ramsay's standards. It won the AA Guide's coveted Restaurant of the Year award in 2008 and finally re-earned its Michelin Star in 2010.

S01E04 - Moore Place (18-May-2004)

The revisited episode initially showed a successful restaurant, but shortly after they reverted back to their old ways (the start of another common trend). The restaurant closed in late 2005, and a new restaurant immediately opened at the site.

Moore Place Today

However, the holding company that owned the property seized the site in 2006, after that restaurant also failed. After numerous attempts to sell the property fell through, the holding company decided to demolish the restaurant in 2011, and built a nursing home in its place.

Thanks for reading! I hope you all enjoyed the post as much as I enjoyed making and researching it! If there's a lot of responses, I'll continue the saga with Season 1 of the US version or just continue with the UK one first - whichever one you guys want.

Having watched and followed Ramsay for a long time, its amazing how people will flatly ignore his changes out of sheer stubbornness.

I'm not surprised, 90%-95% of restaurants fail in their first year. It's a wonder if these jokers stood a chance.

pls do all of them D:

He actually addresses his own restaurant closing in a episode. Takes full responsibility for his mistakes and uses them as examples.

pls do all of them D:

Carry on OP. I really enjoy Kitchen Nightmares.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They seemed to have closed from their own faults than that of ramsey

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always googled restaurants after watching an episode and rarely found one to be open or successful. Kind of sad.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1 in 3 restaurants fail in their first year. After the novelty of Ramsey being there wears off its up to the owners. Not his fault.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And they're also getting income for the first time in who knows how long and either being irresponsible or spend it trying to catch up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love this show and live Gordon Ramsey. Keep em coming OP.

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Much appreciated!

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yes, please please! I love these aftermath updates!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So in other words, if you screw with Ramsey, you get lose your restaurant.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So many people in the industry shouldn't be. They think running a restaurant will be fun but you really have to sell your soul to succeed.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. It's a huge amount of effort and money with still a good chance to fail even if you don't screw up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like the show. You know if they are bad enough to be on tv a couple of visits won't change long term bad business decisions.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great show, both the US and UK versions.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

More please.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OP, is the blog "where are they now" yours? If it is, i really like it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't blame Ramsey for their closings. The restaurants were circling the drain long before he arrived. You can only help so much.

10 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

If anything, this shows you can't turn around years of laziness and neglect in a few days.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Love this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know the details of what happened but he got involved with The Laurier in Montreal which was already an institution for many...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Years and after he left it closed just a few months later.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What about the Amy's Baking Company one that got so wildly popular on the internet!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they finally shut down at the beginning of the year.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's kind of the issue with 5 day turn arounds like these shows it's very hard to instill lasting change and easy to revert under pressure

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Jon taffer's book he revisits bars from the first season of bar rescue. Most have closed for various reasons. One for unsanitary conditio

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The best of the U.K. Version was soul food shack, upon his first visit the food was good. Just mismanaged. That's my favorite episode.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Season 2 was posted today - with Momma Cherri in it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been watching season 4. Amy's Baking Company FTW!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Christ some of these are depressing.

10 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair most of those who fail tend to refuse to change their old way. I mean the first restaurant is unsanitary anyway.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

1/2 but you don't change over night and Ramsey emotionally bullies and abuses them. That is stressful and belittling and no one can change

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

2/2 overnight and under those conditions.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The lessons he teaches are very easy. Clean kitchen, simple good menu, customer service and consistency.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Most, most of these are depressing, but 99% would likely have failed without intervention

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh don't worry - this is just the tip of the iceburg. On the flip side, the success stories are very uplifting.

10 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 0

I don't know, losing everything you have and turning to a life of drinking because no one will hire you due to a show is pretty bad

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

hey..... OP.... do you got more? i like it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah i started watching around season 2, can't wait for psycho amie.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I've only seen a few episodes of the US version and the behind the scenes in the kitchens were cringe worthy

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

generally i like the UK episodes more as it more about cooking/the busness and less about drama which the US show focused on

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yeah, as a rule, I hate the US episodes. The UK ones are pretty good.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I don't watch cooking shows for drama or reminders that people are horrible.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do yourself a favor and watch the Fiesta Sunrise episode (US - S02E09). One of the worst kitchens on the show.

Ah yes. This crazy bitch. She is from Scottsdale though...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah i saw that one. Bitch is crazy.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The UK version of this show was WAY better than the FOX disaster.

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

It was more real. But I do love me some cheesy American OTT dramu. Which is strange cause I hate UK Shit like that

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

They way the US (fuck you fox) version is presented is insulting dumb. Constant sound/music effects, heavy editing and overly dramatic.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

yeah, the forced drama in the US version made the whole thing look disingenuous and gave it a very bland repetitive feel.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

*queue overused drama zwiiing sound*

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. They do the same thing with Masterchef and try to force conflicts. If I wanted that much drama I'd watch Big Brother.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The US version even has a disclaimer at the start to say it's "edited for dramatic effect". Why ruin a format that works?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gordon (mostly) seemed to genuinely give a shit in the UK version.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The UK version didn't try to force drama into the watcher and genuinely about fixing the restaurant

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Damn. I need to watch those then.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lemme tell you about how disorienting hearing Gordon Ramsay dubbed in spanish is.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like it'd be hilarious.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's suave, deep voiced and very lacking in his creative swearing. Watching it with my elderly host parents was a mix of dread and dismay.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dread that I my host family would hear some sort of ungodly, hellish invocation of rage and disappointment that it didn't happen

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

do a where are they now for amys bakery

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They have done, it is on YouTube. They cashed in on their notoriety and surprisingly are still in business

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe she returned to hell and reclaimed her post as satan!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I dont know I dont think satan is that inept

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I stand corrected.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought I saw a post about all the places he tried to save, most of them failed.

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Most are already so deep in trouble that nothing can save them.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The thing is the places he's "saving" were going to fail anyway if they didn't change. He taught them how to change but most didn't.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Ramsay joins a restaurant, which is already failing, it is a drastic attempt to save what's left, reverting back to old habits doesn't help.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Something like an 88% failure rate. I'll have to check my stats...you can change the restaurant, but you can't change the owners.

10 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

Worked in a small French/ Italian restaurant. The owner made a lot of bad decisions.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

People fall back into old habits, sometimes though it just wasn't meant to be, the failure rate of restaurants in general is much higher.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I worked in a place that was on season 3, looking forward to that post. For us we shut due to a mix of reasons, largely external

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

What episode?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't remember the number - venue was Clubway 41 in Blackpool, renamed Jackson's
