Trying to convince my brothers that they have to work hard in school, using my own mistakes as an example, but they insist on slacking off, saying "money doesn't buy happiness".

Money cannot buy happiness, but it makes a good down payment.

@OP The reply to which is, "But it's more comfortable to cry in a Mercedes than on a bicycle."

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Neither does poverty.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Money doesn't buy happiness but poverty buys nothing

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My nephew is the same way, thinks minimum wage will make him happy & is dropping out of HS. He's going to just have to learn the hard way.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And I've even been saving for his college expenses - hopefully some day he'll wise up and do trade school.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lack of money can sure as fuck prevent it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The correct quote really should be 'Money can't prevent sadness.'

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

That's even less correct.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Perception buys happiness but that's harder then getting money

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But living on the streets digging in trash cans for food doesn't make happiness either

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Money can't buy happiness, but it can sure as shit can buy a better kind of misery!

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I like this.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of unhappiness is caused by stress which can almost always be alleviated through being able to buy whatever you damn well please

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can buy health insurance that can prescribe drugs that can replace happiness every 6 hours taken with food

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was always told money wouldn't buy happiness, then I got some money and realized I was lied to allot.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Lol. I slacked off on my last year of high school. Senior slide is real.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What money does buy is security, comfort, and peace of mind and that basically translates to happiness.

9 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 5

Spending money on trips and with people, as well as paying others to do tasks you do not want to, brings happiness

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're on the right track - tell them stories instead of sermons if you want to move them

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Somebody's got to flip burgers for the rest of us

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

"Money can't buy happiness" - no financially stable person ever.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Money can't buy happiness... but I aint ever seen a sad motherfucker on a jetski!!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Or Alternatively, there's a Dutch song about this, loosely translated it says: Money doesn't buy happiness, but it helps a great deal.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Being uneducated and poor as shit doesn't buy happiness either tho...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

@op challenge their pride. Make them go a few weeks or a month paying for everything themselves using a budget of a few hundred dollars.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Easier to say: Lack of money brings you unhappiness

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To quote the Simpsons: Money can be exchanged for goods and services

9 years ago | Likes 487 Dislikes 2

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I've never been.. but I feel like i wholly agree with this statement

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's a study that says making at least $75k a year makes you happy. http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2019628,00.html

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Then I'm $35k away from happiness.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's also two different types of happiness when it comes to money. Which they explain in the article as well. @OP

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@QualityQuiche

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but being poor buys less happiness.

9 years ago | Likes 113 Dislikes 2

That's what I'm TRYING to get through their thick skulls!

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Remember when we were kids and adults were trying to teach us shit and we just brushed it off and ignored it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lay it out in terms of bills and outgoings for a basic standard of life then ask how they intend to pay it

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Drop them off in a Venezuelan favela with 9 dollars and no passport, and sing "money doesn't buy happiness" as your taxi drives off.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From experience, lived paycheck to paycheck at my last job because job gave none of the monies. New job, I can afford luxuries like 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A self-cleaning litter box. Trust me, nothing says happiness like not having to deal with poo every day.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

"nothing says happiness like not having to deal with poo every day". That's some Confucius level wisdom right there.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I poo every day and I'm pretty happy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry last few generations are incapable of learning. They already know better, after all they've been told they're smart their whole lives.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

oh some of us are capable, and good at it... im now in a job market where demand is so huge im in a wage bubble and loving it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, if you are a young, druven person you should do really well right now, particularly in cities with shortages. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately we get a lot of 19 & 20-year-olds applying who have never had a job.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeh those would be an issue,im a young engineer who found the defence sector, its mad how keen companies are for anyone my age with a masters

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best dad advice I can give: Life is like a shit sandwich; the more bread you have the less shit you have to eat.

9 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 7

You're a fucking shit eating dad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This is by far the worst advice I've ever heard of, dad..."ah yes, but you have heard it!" - Dad

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That doesn't sound right. At all.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

Have you lifed at all?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Less shit relative to the amount of bread***

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Why don't we just use the bread to make some delicious reubens, instead?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but you still eat the same amount of shit

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

But it goes down easier.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When you have cotton mouth from the bread, the shit acts like a lubricant. YAY!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well no you can just eat the bread.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna ask my wife to put this into needlepoint.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also as a side note, best dad advice I ever got was "Never tell someone you love them for the first time while you're both naked or drunk."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can buy things that make you happy. Or at least make it so you don't have to worry about things.

9 years ago | Likes 331 Dislikes 4

Money is good, but an education that gets you into a job you actually enjoy is way more important

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can buy a jet ski. Nobody's sad on a jet ski.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Money doesn't buy happiness but being broke sure buys a lot of misery.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Transient happiness

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd take transient happiness over omnipresent debt.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Money would buy me a house with a yard, a garden, and a second dog. and pay off my debts, that'd make me pretty happy.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Money can't buy you happiness, but there's something to be said for financial security...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

At what cost? Not worth it if you're gonna blow your brains out from stress.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There's a study that says making at least $75k a year makes you happy. http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2019628,00.html

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

But there's two different types of happiness when it comes to money. Which they explain in the article as well.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In southern California that's about 125.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh no doubt haha

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like whooers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can buy heroin.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Travel makes me very happy

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can't buy happiness, but it can bribe misery

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Money can just straight up buy happiness. That old wives tale is just blatantly wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It can buy you out of certain kinds of unhappiness. But not usually buy happiness.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Show me the person who is sad driving a bugatti home from a $500 dinner to their mansion and I'll show you someone with chemical imbalances.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's pretty ignorant.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The older I get the more I realize that money can absolutely buy happiness.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

You're not old enough.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

Sure I am. You're not old enough to judge that.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

See, that's immature

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

No it isn't. You just give move value to your judgment then other people do.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yup. Being able to cover your bills & buy whatever food you want goes a very long way toward happiness. Beyond that are diminishing returns.

9 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

So much yes

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Omg I've been barely scraping by on my single income for two years. My husband has work now and makes more than me. Idk what I'm going to do

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

with all this money. I was nearly in tears when he told me the hills for the month were already paid and we still have another check coming.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My advice would be to not let it change how you live too much. Dunno your age, but you’ll thank yourself later if you save & invest. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I spend my money on simple pleasures like food & mini-vacations, & split extra between retirement, stock, and high-yield savings accts. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yup, this... i have enough for the bills and a chunk extra, dont actually want any more or the inheritance ill get one day as feels like 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

ill have more stress because higher net worth...

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

You have to learn how to be rich. Anyone can be poor.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i think so, also this would be rich with responsibilities, not just handed down massive wealth

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you got it pretty rough.. hang in there

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

well most of what inherit means i become landlord(lady) and responsible for the several hundred people who live on the estate and the 1/2
