I think Cruelty is the means to the end product. the end product is Control. If you can keep people scared, sick, poor, lonely, you can make them irrational. Once you have them feeling instead of thinking, its easy to get them to do what you want.

If I had my admittedly very insignificant way, I'd tear it all down and start with a more intelligent, ethical, humane system that has actual accountability which keeps the corrupt, hateful, self serving, villains (hint: rich, you're villains, not winners) out of it.
