Just being able to read an error message on a copy machine or computer screen is apparently a superpower and I have it.
Being able to read emails and schedule documents and even company guidelines is a nigh-unknown skill and I do it!

I appreciate that the original poster claims it's form the 80s, but the discussion of it all seems to stem from January this year (from a cursory search I just did). I mean, clearly it's a corollary of Chekov's Gun, but the concept must have been around forever, so I struggle to believe that no-one's given it a name other than someone who got a letter from Asimov over 40 years ago...

Never thought about it before, but you're right, there's a lovely cadence to the flow of the word because of that hiatus. Also my brain keeps wanting to spell "hiatus" as "hiaitus" and I don't know why.

I really can't agree with that. An author with no knowledge of their genre is going to travel well-trod ground for a long time before they get anywhere interesting.

I don't think they meant someone who has literally no knowledge of sci-fi, but a sci-fi story from someone who has literally never even heard of science fiction or its tropes would be interesting. It might not be good, but even if it just covers old ground it would show something in exactly what ground is covered. Such a person doesn't exist anymore though.

At the same time, though, what they write might be a lot more interesting for people who aren’t as well-versed in the genre, particularly if the style is fresh. Everyone brings something different to the table. (Or at least, there are many different things that can be brought to the table.)

Depends on the reader too. If they are also new to the genre, like I was when I was 8 and reading HP for the first time. The reader also needs to be versed in the genre to understand the tropes and underlying nuance of genre.
