I love this movie so so much. Absolutely perfect use of William Hurt being despondent and weird, Jennifer Connolly being being alluring, Rufus Sewell being handsome and confused and Kiefer Southerland being an evil scientist.

Avoid the theatrical cut if possible. If you can't avoid it, mute the movie until you can see the pocketwatch. Much better experience.

Matrix got all the credit back then but this movie and the Thirteenth Floor were awesome hidden gems, which came out around the same time as the Matrix

The 13th Floor was great, true! And the Cardigans video clip for Erase/Rewind had a scene that wasn't even in the movie, IIRC

Really liked this! The subgenre is known as “Technoir”, a mix of sci-fi and film noir.
Check out the movie that started the trend, “Alphaville” (1965). It is equally good and you can find it for free on YouTube

Underrated? It's certified fresh on rt and has a 75-90% everywhere else. Even Roger Ebert gave it a good score when it came out so it's not like it was critically panned at the time.

That's not what underrated means. If it was critically panned, then yes it would be underrated, but it wasn't. It was poorly received in 1998 but it's not like people don't know about the movie today. It's in literally everyone's top 10 sci-fi list, it absolutely is not an underrated movie lmao

Most people today use "underrated" to mean "it deserved more praise than it got" or "a lot of the criticism it got was unwarranted". They don't literally mean "the object in question received ratings lower than it deserved by official or professional raters". You can disagree on the word is used, but as to what people meant by using it, I think there's little to be argued about concerning this particular film.

Ok great, neither of those definitions apply because it wasn't panned by audiences or critics, less people saw it than the matrix which is par for the course for a sci-fi film in theaters. You're looking for a word that means "more people should have watched this when it released" and "underrated" is not that word.

Which cut did you watch? They dubbed her in the botched theatrical cut, but she actually sings herself in the director's cut, which works brilliantly in the context of the story.

That's typically the case. Producers get involved and want movies explained. They did that to Bladerunner. The director's cut removed the opening narration.

It's not just a feeling, that was a last minute change imposed by the studio because they were afraid people wouldn't get it by the time the plot became obvious

I saw this right before matrix in the late 90s and thought both had very similar concepts, even though they are obviously extremely different. Great movie

After watching Dark City it seemed very likely that inspiration was taken in the creation of The Matrix. I think it’s awesome when I can see creative links between projects through the ages.

Dark City came out in 1998, Matrix in 1999. I doubt they could watch a movie, take inspiration, write a script, film, edit, and get it out in a year. Much more likely both films had some overlapping sources of inspiration?

If the beginning started with a voice-over or text explaining the premise, it wasn't the director's cut. The director's cut is the better film, in many ways, but also because it preserves the mystery of what's happening instead of spoiling it immediately.

Director's cut is... darker? Like it was color corrected to be darker. It also cuts out the opening narration, it also rounds out some relationships a bit better and shows John using his powers a little more. I dunno, it just makes for a better movie IMO

Is it longer? I think the main thing I didn't like about the movie is that the second half wraps up too quickly. It does a fantastic job in the first half in building up this mysterious city, then the second half is like "yadda yadda yadda, the good guy beats the bad guys, the end"

Good movie, aptly rated. If people could stop calling things they like underrated, that'd be great. You could record a donkey farting in a tin can and someone on youtube will call it underrated, guaranteed.

A donkey farting in a can is significantly more unique and rare that just a video of a human farting. Ive seen random videos of people farting, as have we all at some point, no interest in seeing another. But Ive never seen a donkey fart into a can. I cant rate it, having not seen it, ill have to without my review, but it seems more than plausible that a donkey farting into a can WOULD be underrated.

Correct, but I aslo literally saw his mouth move, as I was in the same room. He was trying to be cool and edgy. I pointed out that he was 9 when Iron Man came out, and wasn't even born when studios started taking comic books seriously, so his point of reference was wildly flawed.
