The old Rankin/Bass Hobbit cartoon from 1977 introduced me to Tolkien and the entire fantasy genre. The art, the soundtrack, everything about it was pure gold when my dad recorded it off the TV onto a vhs tape. I was hooked.
Oddly enough, thanks to some members of the church I was raised in, he also bought into the D&D satanic panic way back when, so he feared and hated everything else related to Tolkienesque fantasy. Said he regretted showing me the Hobbit in the first place.
And today I own more D&D books than I have room for. Sorry dad.
Anyone else cut their nerd teeth on these movies?
