I usually do very little on my birthday but I do take the week off and leave town for a couple days. For my 40th I had plans for the entire week. As we were finishing dinner on the my birthday(first of seven days off), I got so sick I was vomiting for 6 days, had to go to the hospital twice, and never left my apt aside from the hospital. I weighed 248lbs on my birthday and 230lbs seven days later. For 41 I took a week off and made no plans.

I recently turned 55 and my 77 year old mom still asks me what I want for my birthday. I buy what I want, when I want it. I don't want or need anything mom! Please keep your money and use it for yourself! That is what would make me happy!

Honestly it takes at least til 50 for the engine to flame out and then you can coast for another decade before things begin to decline a bit. The knowledge and wisdom/experience you gain as you get older outweighs the loss of your 20yo body.

I tried taking my 40th off to just relax at home. Got called in to work. That evening, middle age slammed into me hard enough to send me to the ER, and I learned I had to drink so much water every day that I had little to no room for anything I might actually enjoy...and that I had to keep this up for the rest of my life.
My 42nd was even worse.

start to shift from birthdays to milestone events. Like, the "I can't read fine print anymore, and have to buy a pair of readers" milestone. Or the "shit, how many surgeries have I had now?" milestone. The surgery one is especially fun, b/c your first major surgery is like "omg, everyone pray for me!". But, after several you're like "ugh, let's get this over with". The "my knees make cracking noises when I do squats" one was fun. ugh

I turned 40 that same year. I was bedridden because i almost lost my foot in a freak accident. I still have my foot though, i can't feel it, but i have it :)
