#23 This here is an Image of the MGM grand Hotel taken by EOTS from 60 miles or 90 Km away. See what I mean about it being able detect even the coldest of objects?

#20 BUT WAIT THERES STILL MORE! She can use this beauty to create a live updating Map/Image of the ground. See this right here? She can use the radar with such accuracy and resolution that It will see the tracks left by your lawn mower! Why is this so Awesome? Because with previous systems you would be lucky to make out a damn house.

How is this all possible you ask?

#26 Obligatory dog tax

#1 This right here motherfuckers is the honey badger of the skies the F-35A. Come rain, snow, hail or Hell she will find you and kill you as easily as the British make tea. She is the Lightest and most maneuverable of the F-35 variants capable of sustaining 9+ G's and a top speed of Mach 1.6+. The maneuverability has been described by pilots as either an "supercharged F-16" or "second only to the Raptor".

#2 See that right there? That's a fantastic little javelin of death known as the AIM-120D. It has Two way data links, GPS AND INS guidance, and a two stage rocket motor. What's all that mean you say? It means it can and will reach out and obliterate its target at 100 freedom units away or 160Km for you others out there. BUT WAIT THERES MORE! The F-35 can carry six of these death arrows internally meaning one F-35 can stand to feast on a flight and a half of her prey in one sitting.

#3 Remember that little part about "come rain, snow, hail or Hell" this Is my case in point.

#4 May your creator help you if the USAF ever decides to visit your front door with these two Daemons of the sky.

#5 This right here is yet another incarnation of the Honey badger of the sky but it takes it to a whole new level as it could not give a flying fuck even if you take out its airfields. I present the F-35B she may not be the most maneuverable but taking that to mean she's not as capable would be a fatal miscalculation.

#6 This is what makes the F-35B all possible while being a massive improvement over the plane she's replacing the Av-8B Harrier. This system consist of a 3BSD (three bearing swivel duct) nozzle that redirects the engine exhaust, Shaft driven lift fan and a pair of roll post for stability. Unlike the harrier that had Hot gas ingestion problems the cool air from the lift fan acts a boundary to prevent the F-35B from ingesting its own exhaust.

Note: this is the lift system from the Prototype X-35.

#10 For those times when things must absolutely die even the heavier F-35B can carry up to 21,000lbs of ordinance between her internal and external hard points. That's more than an F-16C, F-15C or A-10C and damn close to the payload capabilities of the F-15E.

#11 Here we can see the F-35B majestically hovering above her sea fairing airstrip.

#12

#13 This right here is beauty incarnate.... you know minus the fact she's a down right ruthless killing machine.

#14 This My friends is the F-35C (or "Reaper" as some in the navy call her) the most expensive variant of the F-35 family. She's not as maneuverable as the F-35A but she is more agile thanks to the larger wing. She is replacing the F-18C and pilots love her for it. You see besides all the fancy electronics and gizmos she's more maneuverable and agile than the F-18C by a large margin though it does helps that she practically lands herself.

#15 MMMMHH look at that tasty Afterburner!
She may be expensive but the F-35C is greatly needed to replace the F-18C fleet that is literally falling apart from the heavy wear and tear of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

#16

#17 and here she is all lined up the floating freedom Island.

#18 Now that we have seen all the pretty pictures lets talk about what makes her worthy of the title "honey badger of the skies".

See those two little windows below the canopy? The one on the right there is part of a system called Distributed aperture system or DAS for short. It allows the pilot to see, ID and react to any threat within 15 miles in a 360 degree sphere of the aircraft. Though I must add that there are reports of it detecting and identifying A-A missile launches from 1,200 miles away. From AK-47s to missiles or fighters it sees all.

The little window on the left is part of the Multifunction advanced data link or MADL for short. It is a secure line of sight (LOS) communication system that largely replaces the open and trackable link16 system found on the F-16 and F-15 platforms. It can transmit and receive three orders of magnitude more data than the old link16 system can (think dial-up Vs Fiber) and in completely stealthy manner. This truly makes the F-35 a 21st century fighter.

#19 This Fucking beauty here is the AN/APG-81 Active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that sits in the Radome at the front of every F-35. These AESA types are thus far the king of Radars they are up to 30% more efficient than the radars carried by most other fighters, have 120 degree FOV (versus 90 in older systems), and can track many targets stealthily. This particular one can see other fighters at well beyond 150 freedom units or 241 Km for the tea sippers out there.

#21 Its all thanks to thousand of these little guys! These are called transmit and receive modules or TX/RX for short. Each AN/APG-81 has anywhere from 1500 to 2500 of these TX/RX modules depending on whose estimate you go by. The awesome thing about them is that they are digital and can each independently act as a mini radar with its own bandwidth and frequency or they can be grouped together to form several mini radars. This effectively allows the AN/APG-81 to change frequencies 1000's of times a second while only using the minimum power required to track a target. So what you may ask? Well this means that the F-35 can detect, track, fire at and kill you without you or your sensors ever even knowing something was searching for you.

# 22 Now this right here is the Eye of Sauron or as others call it the Electro optical targeting system or EOTS for short. It is an all weather day or night thermal sensor capable of passively targeting and tracking even the coldest of objects at 90 miles or 140+ km away. Most other similar systems can only pull that off when looking at an afterburner after some bad Taco bell. She can and will Pos ID any target from airliners to the dumbass with an AK.

#25 Now this right here is what ties this all together and makes the F-35 the most lethal thing in he sky. I present the Helmet Mounted Display version 3 or HMDIII for short. This beauty of technology essentially gives the pilot X-ray vision and ties together all the sensors we talked about and a few I skipped through something called sensor fusion. The F-35 also just so happens to be the best damn thing on the planet at sensor fusion as she has over 650 ways to detect track and identify targets. To put that all into perspective even her bigger cousin the F-22 only has 150-200 ways to track, and ID her targets.

Feel free to ask questions or expand upon what I've talked about (I left out a lot of other cool stuff to shorten this for you)

Credit to Lockheed Martins Flicker account for most of the Hi-res beauty shots.

FP Edit: Wow I can't believe this made FP! Seriously expected to reach around -50 with this post so thank you people of Imgur! Again if you have any questions about this aircraft (or any modern one really) I'm more than willing to answer them in the comments or by PM.

Never try to hit on a female pilot. You'll get in the Daangerr Zone!!

Hate to tell ya that picture of the MGM is old af -- it's taken from a SNIPER pod off an F-16 from maybe 6? 7 years ago?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the info! next time I'll correct that and try and find a better representation

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do more

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I probably will in the future

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still prefer the F-302

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like the way you think :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wonder what elliptical lift load looks like on this thing and also the freaking induced drag pulse the Oswald efficiency. Got info

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've fapped to much less.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm still more afraid of an RC-135 than an F-35. RC-135 = All your intel are belong to us (even your wifi signal and weapons capabilities)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used the VR goggles at a Verizon store once...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thought f35s were shit?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Far far from it. leave it to modern media to loose its shit and put things out of context.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Surely the media would not lead americans astray! Who'd a thunk it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh boy yea this exact article is my case in point on this. Thanks for sourcing it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

May be going to fly one of these in the near future :3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome best of luck to you!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*case IN point

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Duly noted I will fix it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would like to officially request that we change the name to the F-35 Skybadger. Haha

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love this plane, spent my last two summers working flight test in the Mojave

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dude thats a dream come true...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where did you get the data on ranges of stuff?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Various sources in the public domain.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work across the flight line of the lockheed factory that makes these bad boys. Badass doesn't begin to describe them.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm not all that far away from you. Got to see one up close and in person down here at an airshow a few weeks ago

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As someone with an Aeronautical engineering degree I've always been a but critical of the F35, but I totally geeked out when (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw one for the 1st time flying with a F-22 in Baltimore a few weeks ago

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same got to see one up close and personal a few weeks ago. Got to watch it climb let me tell you that fucker can climb almost like a raptor

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They certainly are amazing, but they just cost all the monies.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

The cost of the plane isn't even all of it. The ships require massive modifications in order to support these aircraft (F35B mostly)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All of them.. all of the monies

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Looked into it, including R & D, I've never seen so many zeroes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Worth it when you realize the Marines now have a fighter that's just as or a little less capable than the F-22 in A-A. Compared to the 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Harrier which wouldn't stand a chance against an F-15. Its a figurative quantum leap in capability.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wow no that's an exaggeration. The F-22 would eat the fat and slow F-35 for breakfast.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Given the F-35 is an order of magnitude stealthier and has EOTS in is favor its a toss up really.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

At the very least the F-22 would win in a beauty pageant, it is one sexy aircraft....mmm

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then the F-22 program fucked up real bad. It's an air superiority fighter where as the F-35 is mostly ground attack.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well its largley due to the rapid advacment of stealth tech and materials between the two programs

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Worth? Worth is a relative term.... worth it to spend trillions on air superiority over whom, exactly?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

considering that according to two different independent studies maintaining our legacy fleet would cost 4 trillion verses 1 to replace it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wow I actually saw this post before the BRRTards showed up. :o

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 6

Thanks for that. I don't think most of the world realise how fucking awesome the F-35 really is

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The main reason why people give it so much crap is because the airforce wanted this to replace the A-10.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People hate jet fighters? I just don't know what to think anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OP oversimplifies, but lots of neat photos and explanation.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had to. Didn't even go into how ECM complements stealth or how RWRs work but did not have the time to to all that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you did.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't forget that the vtol system in the B is British as they are designed to be used by the FAA on the new carriers.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#7 Dat ass... hnnnnngggg

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

More like a gaping butthole

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey an ass is an ass. And this one is well-built.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It certainly has fire

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cool post, @op, but I'm still convinced this thing is an overpriced boondoggle. We should've learned from the F-111 (or the F-4 Phantom).

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 7

its almost as if the acquisitions committee secretly believes this weapon will never be needed.. hmmm..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The F-35 is a disaster, worst thing we've done such some of the messed up century series planes during 50s/60s.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Heya.. They made the magnificent f22. It was expensive as hell, so they made this cheaper aircraft instead :P

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I think "cheaper" is relative. Had all three services adopted (and adapted) the F-35A, it might actually be true.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a reason the F22 stopped production, to much "cool" stuff they couldn't export. So they made a less cool version, granted for export

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well overall cheaper than maintaining the current legacy fleet out to 2060. Also not much worse on a per unit basis.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But.. all three did adopt and adapt it. A model is USAF, B model is USMC, C model is USN.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Were also selling units worldwide.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but the three planes are very different. More differences equals $$$$

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really, actually. C model has reinforced landing gear/shorter wings. A has longer wings and is normal everywhere else. B can hover.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F-4 was a largely successful plane evidenced by its service world wide. Only problem was we did not train out guys to dogfight early on.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

If you're going to take a plane and make it multi-service, you take an already good design and adapt it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it really helps if the base design is fairly simple. The F-16 has become so adaptable because it had a simple design goal: cheap 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

manoeuvrable fighter. They achieved that and now it is a solid platform for branching out. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't try to please everyone out of the box. It just doesn't work.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The point of mentioning the F-4 is that it WASN'T a plane that they tried to design for multi-service use. USAF F-4's still had tail hooks!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The famous "Pardo's Push"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The F-4 had a fast landing speed. The runways had arrestor cables at the ends incase of loss of brakes or drag chute. Source: father flew F4

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's good info. My point is that the Phantom was *only* designed for the Navy. It was adapted for everyone else.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are significant differences in USAF tail hooks and navy tail hooks. Not to mention the vast differences in landing gear.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The point is that the Phantom wasn't designed out of the box to meet USAF and USN (or USMC) needs. The Lightning II is trying to do this.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Um no, from the outset the F-4 was designed with their use cases I'm mind.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

so imgur completely FUBARed the image order and I have no clue how to fix it.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Seriously Its supposed to flow a certain way but after uploading it imgur screwed it up. anyone got any advice on how to fix it?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Go into your albums (from your username drop down menu top right), go into this album and there is a rearrange images option on the right.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its saying I must remove this album from the gallery first. No idea how that works either

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ugh, don't do that then. File a bug report. We've been complaining about this issue since the new UI was in beta.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Tell us the order it's supposed to be #3, #1, #2 e.g in that format

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Labeled all the images for you

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You might also want to update your post to explain the hashes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really did get FUBARed then

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That cold testing reminded me of the time they sold AMRAAMs to Finland. Over here they realized that they don't work in cold climate. 5/5

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah that was kinda funny. Had the same problem at 60k ft for some time too but that all got fixed thankfully

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I always wondered that how is it possible that missiles that operate up in the cold sky can't work properly in cold climate

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The more air around, the easier it is to transfer heat. At high altitude there isn't as much air. That's my guess anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shit happens with complex chemical mixtures that you sometimes can't predict and that's why you test. They just decided it was not worth 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the extra cost to test the missile to those extremes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. But good thing that they fixed that problem

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not a fan of the F35, but that Ass is the best / IMO they shouldn't have done the F35b, that was that 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was that version that caused the more trouble and hit the reputation of the F35, otherwise it's a decent aircraft

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats a common misconception really. Heck the A&C dont even have the same fuselage as the B.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a flying crew chief for the KC-10 refuelers in the USAF. We dragged some 35's across the Atlantic not so long ago to England. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 1

CA or NJ?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ca

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just left there a year ago. I was a boom. Great community in Big Sexy!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha! Wonder if you know me or we deployed together.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My name is in your username LoL

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have some pics from my mission if you guys would be interested. The view from our refueling bay is amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

Hell yeah that would be awesome! Just keep it UNCLASS man. Were you with the group that got them to the RIAT airshow?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

We quick turned them as soon as we got them out to England. Our sister jet was there... just posted them

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How many fill ups to get across the pond?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That would be a better question for the refuel operator. I woke up for the dog and pony show when PA took pictures from the refuel bay. 1/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The rest of the flight I was knocked out. We broke on the east coast for 3 days and I worked damn near every bit of it. 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I slept 9 of the 11 hours in flight. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a KC-135 Boom Operator, it usually takes about 7 or 8 refuelings to get them across.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So roughly 1 per hour?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More like every 45 mins, they like to keep as close to full tanks as they can incase they have to divert in the middle of the flight

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are all great. Thanks for sharing.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Quite welcome

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

mother of god that third one has got to be one of if not the best picture I've seen of the F-35B. Public affairs should have used that one..

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

All these are public affairs. It would be a No No to release ones that aren't. I was right there when they were taken though.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Oh wow then why the heck have I never seen them before

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Damn, you ain't kidding about the amazing view

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best seat in the whole Air Force. I might even argue the whole world.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How many caught fire?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

According to internal data they all will eventually.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How do they compare to the F22's?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're like 13 Fs better

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Highly underrated comment right here

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got a close up tour of the 22. It was really impressive. The 35 is alien like though. There's just something about it that blew me away.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Many thanks.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well the F-22 os going to be the better one at killing 4th gen fighters bit when it comes to hunting and killing other 5th gens that 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Goes to the F-35 IMO. Largley due to it being stealthier having EOTS, DAS better EW system and much better sensor fusion.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At 1.5 Trillion with a T fucking better be! But yeah I agree...it's fucking amazing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F22 is more expensive, can't land on carriers and doesn't have the fancy infrared ground targeting sensor.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F22 is faster, more maneuverable and stealthier. F35 can carry a much larger selection of weapons.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just turned down a job offer from lockheed martin.. goddamn working on one of these would be sick but it was in Rotary Machine Systems

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Our shop got the offer to manufacture parts for them. But moving machines and creating a security control 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And getting one of the highest ISO standards proved to be really hard, really costly and in the end not worth the pay. A little dissapointed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait you could have still worked on the S-97 raider... what did you pass that up for!?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It was my first offer.. trying to play the field

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
