Our company standard is to give files a draft and version number. Version changes when you send a file externally.
So D1_V1, D2_V1, D1_V2, D2_V2, D3_V2, D1_V3...

I do that. Dates and then versions. probably explains why I'm not any good at the artistic part of design.
