The death of the rental market has fundamentally changed Hollywood. You could make movies that did okay in theaters because it could keep making money in rentals & VHS/DVD sales. You could make mid-budget movies. Now, everything has to do well in theaters. Big budget, IP, Sequels. There was a clip of Matt Damon talking about it. Streaming has drastically cut down on movie sales. To have a better chance of making money, they base things on something that already works, sequels, IP, spectacle.

During/after covid, a movie needed a big punch in order to get people to go sit in a confined space for 2-3 hours. That pushed the mid-budget movies onto streaming, where they tried charging "admission" for new releases, but people were pretty solidly against it. So now, you only really get huge budget in theatres, and low budget goes direct to streaming for 'free'. There's no middle. People are less concerned about covid now, but now a night at the movies costs $100, so it has a similar effect.

And they know if they lose the rights they can't leech off the MCU any-more.
And all the Spider-man spin off movies is because they want to make their own version of the MCU, because they have the rights to every character that first appears in Spider man and Fantastic 4. So the spin offs are them trying to make money, and doing a very bad job of that.

I argue the same thing with video games as well - as an example, Nintendo (and Konami, I guess) should remake both Castlevania 2 & Zelda 2. There's some good ideas there that the NES just couldn't handle, you could make a killer fuckin' game out of those today

I'd like to see a great "Hitchhiker's Guide" movie, but I think the reason they've sucked is that it just doesn't lend itself to movie format, so I think they would just fail again. Same with Endor's Game and I'm sure a long list really.

It was basically a step above an indie film.
Most of the new IP's aren't coming out of the main stream studios, but smaller independent creators.
Or from seasoned creators who basically act as the IP guarantee. Simply because their name being attached to the project will make people go see it. Like a Spielberg Movie.
