I Found An Incredible Piece Of American History With My Metal Detector

This button is not only my favorite find this year, but ever. 1780's "King & Constitution" Loyalist button. About the size of a quarter, this gold gilted brass button would have been worn by those living in America who opposed independence and wished to remain loyal to the British Crown during the revolution. The current thought is that about 20 percent of the colonists were Loyalists.

Towards the end of the revolution the loyalists had their land taken from them and most fled to Canada, and so these buttons are more commonly found there.

Also found on this trip, 1787 Connecticut Copper. Depicting George II of England on the front and Britannia on the Reverse, these coins, along with VT, NJ, and MA, were some of the first minted in America.
