Larry Walters AKA the "Lawn Chair Pilot" was the first man known to attempt what is now known as cluster ballooning.

Initially planning to rise only a few hundred feet, Larry rose to nearly 3 miles into the sky over L.A. county.

He had dreamed of attempting such a stunt since childhood

He used helium-filled weather balloons and his supplies included snacks, beer, and a pellet gun to shoot the balloons out when he planned to descend.

He also wore a parachute and brought a CB radio.

At one point a TWA captain spotted him and reported passing a man in a lawn chair holding a pistol at 16,000 feet.

He eventually returned safely to ground some 15 miles from his departure spot and was promptly arrested by LAPD.

Since then, cluster ballooning has become a popular form of diversion and is practiced around the world.
