Never had a job where I though a union was important before. Combination of award wages, good enterprise bargaining or salaries position. Current role has a union so I joined. There’s a strike soon. I don’t NEED better money or conditions, but understand that others in the union do. That’s why I’m joining the strike.

Well that's not very selfish of you. What is this country coming to? We're supporting each other now?! /s to the max

Helpful hint: Bring a cooler (preferably with wheels) full of bottled water and snacks for your fellows on the line during strike.

Get stuck in my dude, sounds like good news
DamascusFire
Also need has nothing to do with it man, asking for more is never a bad thing, you're a worker and an element in the business ladder

Hey, it's free time off work
huffnpuff72

Best of luck! I live near Seatac and if the AlaskaAir pilots go on strike I'm gonna picket with them. #unionfamily #solidarity

On the flip side of this are there people who professionally work places that are on strike?
zeroisnothing
Some places try to have management fill in... It goes about as well as you can imagine.

They're called Scabs

Hopefully everyone reading this post will remember this next time they see a picket line and not cross that line in solidarity for workers ½

Fighting for better working conditions(safety) , better wages, health care (because our government doesn't this is a human right!) etc...

Good job! Check out how unions have worked in nordic countries, Finland and Sweden for example, and see that the strike is sometimes needed.
squidPilot
Unions in Sweden now days are just a rich club where the union leaders goes around the world and party up most of the money
squidPilot
But they used to be good for the worker. But not recent decades

Union officers need to be held accountable...vote them out..
huffnpuff72
They were like that in Aus too for quite a few years, but lately we’ve seen a lot of action. IMO it’s cyclic and related to cost of living
insongwhang
That doesn't null all the work they've done so far.
armagetz
It does null at least some of it though. That money comes from somewhere, and it is a cost that’s not going to the workers.

insongwhang
Even if none of the money would go to workers (some does directly and some does indirectly), the cost of being in a union still is worth it
insongwhang
for the benefits it brings.
