This is mountaintop removal coal mining in Central Appalachia
First they remove all of the trees and soil, then blast away the mountains.
They've done it to well over 500 mountains in the region.
And what's left bears no resemblance to the beautiful landscape from before. All so they can mine coal cheaper.
But don't worry, they "reclaim" the land and replant.
And it usually looks like this. And this is bullshit.

It's awful, but please remember that calling them "they" doesn't exclude you from being a consumer of coal.

Appalachian here, thanks for sharing OP.

my sister works for a nonprofit in a small town in KY - they have a "black/gold" annual parade to celebrate coal use -_-

One can't solve a problem they don't know about or actively pretend isn't happening
CowboyZ
Sounds like what they do in the Alberta oil sands. Except the oil sands are a "disaster" while nobody mentions that it happens everywhere.

Thanks, Republicans!

Appalachian here, Thanks for the share, and what parts of the mountains are they operating in? Maybe we can form a protest?

natural gas actually. and if it were coal, the vast majority would come from other regions/methods. this creates <4% of US electricity

Appalachia as in the US - land of the free and brave?
