I saw a longer cut on opening weekend that changed by the next weekend when i brought a friend to check it out - the scenes you mentioned i recall as being much longer on my first viewing
Well, unfortunately we'll never know for sure because apparently the negatives were either thrown out or improperly stored so they degraded beyond salvage.
Not just gore. There was some sexual content that got cut too. I've seen the phrase "blood orgy" used to describe one of the cut scenes. And it was like 40 minutes cut off the runtime. So definitely color me curious.
I was really spooked by the start of the movie with the creepy hallways where something is waiting. Then I watched the rest of the movie where it turned into looney toons cartoon violence and stopped being afraid.
