Thank you for the dump! I've recently started watching Star Trek Next Gen and I am thrilled. I cannot believe I've wasted years thinking I won't like it because it's scifi. I will forever think of scifi from now on as space fantasy

...Even Star Wars is more than lasers (it's also swords that are lasers). Star Trek had cell phones before we did. Robots, time travel, clones, everything aliens, terraforming, portals, alternate dimensions, Matrixes, Terminators, space odysseys in 2001, no mouths to scream. Willy Wonka's got a shrink ray and flying elevators. Hitchhiking! Science fiction, the entire potential of science...'Lasers, basically'. -- This is why the universe has bad PR.

The main takeaway is I haven't been a fan of technology focused entertainment, mainly because I seek an escape into a completely different world than our own, with no technology, however distant or impossible, but maybe with magic and elves. But I am glad I started broadening my horizon.

You will have to deal with techno-babble. My Dad (an engineer) loved to make fun of it. Some of my fondest memories of him are sitting around speculating on exactly what the power source for phasers are, or the absurdity of the amount of computing power needed run a transporter. (we decided the secret was the crystal light computing module revolution of 2248).

The transporters have Heisenberg Compensators. Honestly, TNG is pretty anti-techno-babble, in the same (but inverse) way that Lower Decks is exclusively techno-babble. They clearly worked very hard to apply what was known about real physics at the time to just about every aspect of the show (and invented a technology when necessary). Then threw that play book out the airlock when Voyager aired.

Most Federation handheld tech like phasers, tricorders, PADDs, and combadges used Sarium krellide power cells. Think Lithium-Ion rechargable batteries but with many multitudes more energy storage potential. As far as computing power, even IRL you have crazy leaps in processing power. The phone in your pocket has much, much more processing power than every supercomputer that existed in the world between 1960 to 1970, combined.
