America is the continent where a bunch of states got together for greater collective bargaining power with other nations. and they refered to that proto nation as "guys That live around here". to the north, you have a bunch of provinces collectively named Canada. to the south is a collection of united states in america who collectively named themselves Mexico.

So, I have MapQuest, but I don't think most people understand how or why this exists, and how different everyone's "maps" have been for years and years now.
Google/apple has always used localized maps to match domestic laws, in order to stay un-biased. in the US, Google uses the GNIS data. So if you're in the US, it'll say Lake America, cross the border and it'll say whatever that country wants it to say. Literally.
Like the sea of Japan, viewed from South Korea just says "East Sea".

Good for MapQuest, but it is objectively inderior to Google Maps presently. I couldn't drop pins from mobile browser, and it doesn't have the snazzy street view features, etc.

Unfortunately, like just about everything else, a little digging will show that the site is no better than google (politically or philosophically speaking or however you want to phrase it). It's owned by an advertising firm, no big surprise when you go there. ads ads and more ads. The internet has gotten to where it pretty much svcks because of ads.

Yeah, I just now searched mapquest on google (to poke a stick in google's eye) and checked wikipedia, and it took me about 3 seconds to figure out that mapquest is just awful. the site is owned by an advertising firm, which makes it no better than google in that regard. ads are the absolute bane of the internet, it's gotten ridiculous.
