On June 14th of this year, a gunman entered the home of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. At 3 o'clock in the morning, the coward entered the house and killed Melissa, Mark, and their Golden Retriever Gilbert, and gunned them down while they slept.

When Hortman and her husband were murdered, Trump, being the spoiled child that he is, threw a temper tantrum and refused to call Gov. Tim Walz. You know, the guy who ran against JD Vance as Kamala Harris's running partner? The guy who repeatedly humiliated both Trump and Vance while remaining civil, simply by pointing out truths? Yeah. Trump said "Fuck those Dems." and ignored what happened.

But now that Charlie Kirk is gone, Trump has decided to issue an order that all flags be flown at half mast for Kirk. For FOUR DAYS. Despite him not being a veteran, a government official, or a politician of any kind.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/11/trump-administration-news-updates-today-latest

Why am I posting this? Because I was born in the USA. I've lived here my whole life. I'm old, and I'm tired. I've been through way too much, and for a while now I've been ready to call it a day.

But that would be giving up. And I'd rather go down fighting, even if it's the most painful, horrific thing I'll ever experience.

My entire family is from the Netherlands. During the Nazi occupation in WW2, my great grandfather stole a Nazi officer uniform, drove up to the gates of Amersfoort, and directed a prisoner transfer. Of his wife and their children. Who had been abducted by the Nazis weeks prior. They were shackled and placed in his car, and he drove off into the night. He did not resurface until well after the war ended. He, his wife, and his children survived. Half of my family did not. They died in concentration camps. In fear. In pain. In the most horrific ways anyone could ever imagine. Choking on poison gas. Starving to death. Raped. Beaten. Shot.

My wife is Hispanic, born in Texas. We traced back her family at least 200 years, all of it in the USA. She's a citizen, more than I am. My parents were Dutch citizens in the US when I was born. I have birthright citizenship. But because I'm white, no one bats an eye. But she's asked on an almost weekly basis "Where are you from?" She's endured people screaming at her to go back home to Mexico. People yelling "Sieg Heil!" from their cars while doing a Nazi salute.

In the face of all of this, how can I not fight? How can I leave to this to someone else, and hope for the best, when the woman I've loved for twenty five years is terrified of what tomorrow will bring? Terrified that if she goes to town alone, she won't come back. That I'll be left alone at home, waiting for her to come back, not knowing what happened to her. That ICE will ignore her status as a citizen, and she'll end up in prison for no reason at all.

I'm old. I'm tired. I'm broken. But that doesn't matter, because I'm still here.

Don't give up. Whatever you do, do not give up. It's already happening again, but we can stop it. The price we might have to pay is high, but for all you hold dear, for every person you love, do not give up. Please. Don't give up.

@OP I'm happy to say in my town teh flags have been ordered to stay up, as no one important died.

You misspelled "Trying to get innocent people killed". Which, by the way, is the difference here: I'm ecstatic that he's dead because he was far from innocent.

I feel old and tired and powerless. My grandfather spent the last two years of the war hiding between floors in my great grandmother's house because he killed an SS officer while smuggling children out of the Netherlands. But the best I can do is sign petitions, and vote with my morals. I'm not built for combat and I'm a klutz, and I'm scared that this really is going to be an actual fight.

You can help. Resistance isn't always combat. There so many other ways to fight.

It is up to us to be the edelweisspiraten. The oss simple sabotage PDF is widely available for the searching. It details how one can sabotage in simple every day ways. I too am older now and caring for my disabled wife and have my own medical conditions. I can't play a large part but I am doing what I can.

IIRC, they wouldn't charge the person who shot the democratic congresswoman and her family with terrorism. I guarantee if they find this person, they damn sure will charge them with terrorism. Trump doesn't even pretend to give a fuck about fairness. He openly roots for terrorism against liberals.

I really wish more people realized we're in an abusive relationship, we can let the Trump regime do as they please and get away with horrors, or fight against it and it cracks down like they want to so they can justify the horrors they're doing.

Unfortunately they are going to get much worse either way at this point before they maybe get better. America is collapsing and it is the people at the bottom who are going to be crushed first.

Kratom for me. Weed when I can afford it (which isn't right now).

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My state legalized (a formality - no one in Maine was having a hard time getting cheap good weed) on the same ballot as the first Trump election. I hate that such an important and historic legislation immediately turned into the saddest consolidation prize ever.

That morning I made a calendar and laid out a different piece for each day of the week. I allowed myself to celebrate, but I’d give it back in a heartbeat to secure safety for our country folk.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, every single person I know, every single one, is absolutely totally exhausted over the constant barrage of evil bullshit that the people in power here want to visit on the majority of people here, and at least 70 million-ish of our countrymen *egging* it on. America will not last to 250 years.

1 year ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

America died when Trump mounted an insurrection and Biden did NOTHING to see him punished for it.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'll tell you, we're not doing great. We have a feckless, worthless party, the Democrats, as our only means of fighting back. We are stuck with only two choices. Tyranny, or revolution. The oligarchs have won, and the only peace we will find is revolution that removes them from power if not their heads.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Is Americans that aren’t in a cult are not okay. We simply aren’t.

1 year ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Dissociation and distraction mostly. Memes, reading, tv, occasionally daydreams of stabbing people that support child rapists, knitting. That and having to work at least a full time job to live dont leave as much time to despair about the state of Amwrica. That is until it's time to go to bed and lay awake at night and think about all of this shit.

Speaking for myself?
It is pretty much the same kind of daily half-numb incredulity as I had during Trump’s Covid, only with even more weariness. It’s absolutely exhausting, and heartbreaking, to see the country I love being wrenched and twisted by these evil people while I feel helpless.

1 year ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

…and speaking as one of the people whose life was changed by Long Covid? It’s making my health even worse. I just bought a cane to help me when I leave the house on bad days- and the bad days are increasing in number. With the safety net being ripped apart and so little progress made on even really getting clinical proof of diagnosis? It’s bad.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

As an American, who works as a collections agent for the IRS, and can't quit or else my children will lose their health insurance and become homeless. The fact that my job exists to take money from average working class Americans like myself, many of whom probably can't afford it, and knowing that that money goes to support Trump an his people. I can tell you that I am truly truly not okay.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Hey. I feel like you need to hear this - it’s okay.

As a barely surviving restaurant worker I’m glad you have a roof over your head, I’m glad you have health insurance, and it’s okay. I’m proud of you for finding the strength to keep going to work and doing what you need to in order to survive.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks. If it weren't for the fact that I have kids, I would quit. I mean, I am the opposite of Robin Hood at this point.

hey would support the current child-rapist president even if they were the ones getting arrested. They would say, like Hitler's population, If Hitler Only Knew! Like Rump, Hitler couldn't care less. It's all about their agenda. The people mean NOTHING!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We are not okay. Stress, frustration, rage,... we've got those in spades.

And what are we doing? The protests are nice for awareness, but we NEED more. When does the call go out? Because lone actors getting fed up are easy to pick off as they pop out. But who are we to ask the people worried for their families to just throw caution to the wind? I certainly can't; I'd be an actual liability in physical fighting and haven't the right to ask that.

It's frustrating. I want to help but don't

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

know how. I've never held a gun, never trained with it, and am physically unfit for direct forms of combat. I've no wheels and little money, so I also don't know how to perform a supporting role.

I really want to know what I CAN do, when I am called.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Tennis racket to return tear gas to sender
Traffic cone to smother tear gas
Umbrellas for minor protection, trash can lid for major protection
Large bundles of crayons for coloured smoke
The small things work
When the time comes, stay safe but be there, that will be enough (: wanting and trying to help is more than enough
A shame I have a ton of fight in me, but live leagues away

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I face a similar dilemma - little money and no wheels.

I could do at least the second and third of those, if it did ever come to my area. But I've little more experience with tennis than the zero I have with guns. And, uh... I'm not sure what the connection of crayons with colored smoke is, so I'd have to figure that out before I know if I could do it.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought you light the crayons like candles, but I'm mixing up two things
The crayons are flammable, but to make the coloured smoke, you need a few extra things, still, easy smoke

I deal with it by focusing on work and leisure as much as I can, attending as many protests as I can, firing off as many emails and phone calls to politicians as I can, and voting when the occasion strikes. I'm not burying my head in the sand, just controlling the stress and de-stressing through what actions I'm able to take.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most I know my age not held back by family or having g kids late are by far ready to go kill these bastards. But sadly, too many others who speak a good game in the end say they won't help or support an uprising even though they want it. That's the major issue. Until a real event to spark it happens, we won't see what needs to be done get done. Sadly, this country is beyond any "healing" and the cancer needs to be cut out.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For me, personally, I’m in a constant state of stress/rage.

I’m barely surviving - pay is laughable, haven’t had health insurance in several years (usable health insurance in seven years), and my only PTO is state mandated accrued 1h for every 40h worked with a 40h/year maximum.

So I’m also exhausted. I cry a lot, I try to breathe a lot. I’m scared for everyone constantly. I’m in therapy, I take my meds, I pet my cats. I see no end, but act as if there will be.

Well, I've had depression and anxiety issues my entire life. Boiled over 2 days after the election when I tried to end my life when dipshit won. Shit is still fucked, and depressing but if I didn't end up in the hospital that night, I'd prolly be dead. I'm on a bunch of meds that work wonderfully(turns out I have bipolar), so being medicated. I don't drink but use a bunch of weed as well.

I work in public ed. It's terrible.

The crazy thing is, a lot of people are cool with all this shit. They tune out. I live in Florida where Ron DeSantis has ruined the schools and the state. But most people here love what he’s doing. There’s the monsters that cheer this shit on like the Nazis in Germany did before them. There’s the people that stick their heads in the sand because it doesn’t affect them. And there’s the rest of us, horrified. Then there’s heroes that shoot Charlie Kirk in the neck to inspire us to fight back.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I suspect Florida has a very, VERY large population of seniors that are outnumbering the other folks. And those seniors love what he's doing because it benefits them. They don't have to care about school quality, because their kids are grown. They don't have to care about environmental issues, because they're rich and live in the best spots where those things aren't a problem. They come from a different era, and hate queers and POC. So Florida goes to shit for everyone else, but not for them.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Nah, it’s the middle aged and millennial people, too, here in Florida. It’s going to vary from district to district, but a lot of people wanted Moms for Liberty freaks on the Sarasota County school board. They were too dumb to realize it would destroy the schools, too. A lot of people are anti-vax, too, even though DeSantis snuck covid vaccines into the Villages, a Trump stronghold before anyone else had access. This state is in for a rude awakening with climate change coming.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Exactly. And not just old rich "Floridians." Same shit you said applies to almost our entire government.

As a foreign-born US citizen, I left during the first Trump term. I was part of a support group for foreign born adoptees. I saw ones with minor criminal violations deported when their adoptee paperwork was found to have errors. My parents lost my paperwork. I spent thousands of dollars to get a copy, only to find my records match 3 other people. I saw the writing on the wall. My wife is foreign. We were supposed to visit my family but we cancelled our trip and I'm glad we did.

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Please, PLEASE, do NOT come back to the US for ANY reason, unless it's unavoidable. Anyone non-white is at risk, every single day. And it will only get worse. Do what you can to help others get out if you can. And warn everyone you know, even those who are white, that the USA is NOT SAFE for them right now.

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I told my wife that months ago and my dad is a Trump supporter so I haven't spoken to him since the election unless I have to. It's a fucking scary world right now. So many protests. So many deaths. So many escalating political tensions. 20 years ago, I was out there protesting for LGBTQIA+ rights. Dealing with racists. It got better for a bit but I agree with you. I am fucking tired.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Also, hint for anyone trying to enter the US from Europe: connect through Dublin, Ireland. Ireland has the US immigration on this side of the pond. It will be much easier to not get scooped up if they reject you (hopefully they will release you back into Ireland. Make sure you have the ability to enter Ireland if that happens) And when you land in the US, you land at a domestic gate, so you have a better chance to not disapear immediately.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I still agree you SHOULD NOT GO AT ALL, but if it's a family emergency or similar, it will probably be the safest port of entry.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

All I can tell you is, I don't know anyone who's actually ok.

My entire generation will likely end up with chronic issues due to mental and emotional trauma. It's not as bad as a combat zone, I can tell you that. But it's not far off, and it's getting worse every day.
