I’ve been reading in some comments that many of you suffer sporadically from sleep paralysis. I thought I’d share the method that has proven most effective for me to wake up rapidly from SP, I hope it helps. Because everyone is different and what works for some might not work for others I’ve also included other methods below, although the first one has proven to be the most effective for many people -myself included.

Reminder of what SP is and why it happens

Sleep paralysis happens either during falling asleep or awakening and is characterized by a temporary inability to move, speak, or react. Sleep paralysis is frightening because we feel awake but have the impression of being held down and are unable to move or scream.

But don't worry : sleep paralysis is a biological event; a hiccup in the brain’s chemical soup as we transition from sleep to wakefulness or vice-versa.

The ultimate and most effective method : scrunch up your face.

That's right - try to pull a face similar to Benicio del Toro's. In other words, snarl and squint. Make a face like you just smelled something bad. Do this 2 or 3 times in a row, and if you can try to open your mouth a little, and the paralysis WILL break. This is extremely effective. The other methods I'll list below can be helpful but this one has proven to be foolproof for many people, myself included.

After you wake from SP get out of bed and wash you face or drink water

If you just stay in bed, the chance of sliding right back into sleep paralysis is pretty high.

Other methods

- Focus on your Breath
Controlled breathing lessens the feelings of chest pain that sometimes accompany SP. Breathing is autonomic like the heart’s beating or digestion, so it’s not paralyzed like the big muscles in our arms, chest and legs. Focus on your breathing, and normally you should be able to control your fear.

- Surrender and Go with the Flow

Instead of fighting, try to relax when you notice SP starting to happen. Prepare an affirmation like “This is SP and I am okay.” If you feel pressure on your chest, see if you can “go with” the pressure rather than against it

- Coughing

Try to cough into wakefulness. Like breathing, coughing can be autonomic or consciously regulated

- Clench your Fist or try to wiggle your toe
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I hope this helps, and do try the first method - it has helped me overcome my fear of SP by knowing I can quickly wake up from it, and as a consequence, I suffer from it a lot less than I used too.

Thanks for the post. I have SP a few times a week, I've dealt with it since around age 13 (38 now). Shadow people must like me, always there

I breathe really deeply so my body rocks a bit - that usually snaps me out of it.

I find it best for a pet to stay in the same room. Cause if they don't feel alarmed, you shouldn't be alarmed.

If you relax, you can go into your dream and have full control. Just don't panic when it happens. I move my fingers to wake up

Thank god i don't have that

I clench my hand. it also happens less since I figured out the root cause of it.. Helped my brother too. I kinda like the scared feeling tho

Even if you know it's sleep paralysis it's scary as hell

I irritate myself by licking the roof of my mouth. Otherwise, I hold my breath periodically. Both help.

Ugh, this used to happen to me all the time as a kid. I don't miss it.

I dig it, feels awesome - once I realize what's happening.

I dunno if I ever had sleep paralysis or if I'm just to lazy to move out of bed :/

Yep, I clenched and told it to ruck off and I got out. The clenching was key there.

This happened to me once and it almost gave me a panic attack.

Recently found out that I've been having sleep paralysis for the last five years. First time I had it I was six years old. Scared me greatly

I mainly focus on my core and explode like I'm throwing weights off me

I have terrifying SP occurrences. Ghosts, aliens, anything scary. I deal with now. If it's noises &shadows I relax and let it happen. If 1/2

might sound a bit dumb... but if you know they are not real, can´t you just "enjoy the show"?

Hell!! you mean you have full delusions? i had a couple of times with noises and shadows and it was enough to get me really super scarred!!

Happened to me once. The only thing I could move with the fingers of my right hand. Sitting upright I had to climb my arm up my shirt 1/2

And pull my eyelid open. It was fucking terrifying!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It happened to me sooo many times that I stopped caring and just went with the flow.

I tried that but I freak out too much...feel the desperate need to wake up :) but yes, that is one of the most natural ways to deal w/ it

How long has this been happening to you?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been dealing w/ insomnia since I was 14 and I'm a very light sleeper. I get SP when I'm utterly exhausted from lack of sleep.1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m 25 now & have learnt to deal with it by exercising &meditating. I try to help people with SP because I know how terrifying it can be2/2

I only got SP twice, each time i was sleep deprived. How regular is it for you?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exhaustion is a definite trigger, same as stress. But at the end of the day, if you've been touched it's a life long journey.
