As much as I'm for radically protecting our planet, blanket statement'ing "data center" is so comically stupid it's insane.
Not expecting anyone to ACTUALLY do it, obviously. ...But if someone DID take this advice you'd sooner disrupt own financial data, your internet access, your favorite site, city hospital/power/water, local transport, even climate important systems, and virtually every other thing other than The Great And Terrible AI Menace. There's **far** more non-AI than AI-related.

I mean, the acceleration of datacenter expansion is undeniable. DRAM and NAND flash prices are through the roof and will be for 5-10+ yrs, GPU availability and pricing are also highly fucked, and local electric and water resources are under heavy strain and prices are going bananas. AI causing new construction and upgrades of existing data centers is the biggest driver behind all of these. DRAM has doubled in the last month, SSDs are up 50%+ in the last TWO weeks, and they're still increasing...

I'm not here to dismiss AI's role in the matter. It's the newest, biggest part of an old problem. But emotionally-charged people with no understanding of digital infrastructure misconstruing all data centers as an AI-specific problem leading to a blanketed "burn/bomb/destroy data centers!" mindset is really bad. This is an extremely broad topic that convers a lot more of our modern lives than people realize. It encourages misinformation while drawing attention away from the pre-existing root.

-I'd like the conversation to be about broader sustainability. If we had a more grounded approach, we could actually retain the energy people are putting into it. But if it's labeled "as an AI problem" once people lose that energy, so will be the window of discussion. We have a rotten house, and I'm tired of people suddenly caring about the newest layer of paint.

Saying burn al the datacenters because of AI so meaningless that it weakens the whole damn argument to nothing. If I was an AI company that's the exact argument I would push to discredit the critics.
