My theory why politicians are actually afraid to pass universal Healthcare is that such a large chunk of the population would quite their jobs if their health insurance wasn't tied to their employment. That employers would actually have to change their HR policies and pay them properly and give e better work hours.

What drives me insane is that even if a Dem win the presidency in 2028, the things that have been broken since 2016 are not going to be easily fixed. Trump's signature legislation is going to end up kicking a lot of people off their insurance, and we simply cannot fix this with more of the market-based healthcare ideas that Dems love so much. Anyone who is not giving full-throated support to MfA needs to be run out of office. We're going to hear a lot of "now is not the time", and fuck that.

BubblesTheFish
Why would he want to impeach dump? He's the only reason democrats win ANY races right now.
doodlydoofus
Yeah, the Dems in office right now seem to think the only way to win is to let Republicans destroy literally everything for 4-8 years, get into office, do the bare minimum which gets everyone to rally around the republican party once more to be like "well they destroyed everything last time, surely they won't do it again." And then they proceed to destroy everything again.
Meanwhile if his re-election were tomorrow, Mamdani would win in a landslide because his strategy is to gasp fix everything

Just Medicare for him. Not for us
barstr7
He doesn't "currently support" it because insurance companies pay him not to but he wants to leave himself an easy out to change his mind if the tides turn. Centrist voters are bad enough but centrist politicians are worse. If you have no opinions of your own then you bend towards whichever side pays you the most.
Arbitrarynamehere
Importantly, good luck finding any volunteers to support your campaigns either. No one is going to go knock on doors or phone bank for "well let's compromise with Republicans on making sure people die of poverty"
awkungen42
Typical liberal shit. Is someone trying to primary this asshole? His term is up in November if he loses.
OtisTDrunk
His current term ends on January 3, 2027
Zamiel77
Nope. They cancelled his Dem primary, so he is running against Lewis Mizrahi (R) in November, and he is guaranteed to win. The primary was cancelled because both Vance Bostic was disqualified and Chi Osse couldn't get the support of the DSA and consequently suspended his campaign. Notably, I cannot seem to find why Bostic was disqualified.
awkungen42
Damn, sucks to know he's getting another term. Feckless chump with no spine gets to ride on by without anyone even attempting to push him out.
Zamiel77
Yep. It's why he feels completely comfortable saying shit like this; he knows he's untouchable for the next 4 years. Ghouls like Jeffries and Schumer are just as bad as Republicans.
dirtylerker
2 years. He's in the house and they only have 2 year terms. The senate is every 6 years, but it is staggered. Every 2 years 1/3rd of the senate's terms expire and an election is held for those seats. It is one of the reasons flipping the senate is so difficult. ~33 seats are up for re-election every 2 years, but most of those seats tend to be solid R or D seats. This cycle is no different, but a lot of solidly R seats are less solid than they have been in the past. Texas for example.
Nanntuckett
Hakeem Jeffries is someone who still thinks “republicans bad, Israel good” is still a good campaign strategy while not promising anything of substance to the voters.
wabitgirl
So a standard statue quo democrat, who has fully adopted the strategy of "lose crucial races, let the country be substantially degraded, then win and do absolutely fucking nothing to reverse the deleterious effects, ensuring that the republicans will take control and continue destroying everything election cycle"?
Nanntuckett
That’s the sad part. So many establishment democrats were happy about how bad republicans screwed up the country because they thought it made them more electable. We don’t want an alternative to republicans who do nothing. We want fighters.
ImmaCatImmaSexyCat
They should just rename themselves the ratchet party and be done with it.
wabitgirl
I think that's an apt descriptor for our government as a whole. Only goes one way.

With how leftists have been beating corporate dems despite being outspent 6-1, 10-1, money from AIPAC and other big donors isnt as relevant. Jeffries is a dying breed. One that I hope is completely phased out within the next few election cycles.

beep0boop
Maybe, but they need to win in less solidly blue areas too, and more importantly, they need to beat Republicans. Either way, the DSA will be a coalition within the Democratic party, and will need to work with the rest to get anything done

I hope he does, and i will be the one pulling the leaver😊

This post would have made sense if you’d posted it before New York’s primaries and Jeffries had an opponent. As it is, this is just gop propaganda to get dems not to vote.
ImmaCatImmaSexyCat
Who cares if he loses? It's not as if him winning has been helpful.
DorkJedi

thanatos777
If the price of losing Hakeem Jeffries was losing a single House seat: absolutely worth it.
That being said, his seat is like D+50. Nobody is wasting their time or money trying to get a Republican to win it.
DontSayRepeat
We can stop him from having power. And this also spotlights why the DSA is the right answer. Insinuating this is GOP propaganda's frankly fucking stupid.
There are other groups that are quite successful right now that are outperforming Democrats everywhere. So how about you stop repeating the Israeli bullshit and get with the rest of us?
pgdave
What party is outperforming Democrats?
DontSayRepeat
Democratic Socialist of America
Such as Mayor Mamdani.
pgdave
He's a Democrat. He is *also* a DSA member, but he's still a Democrat. He ran in the NYC Democrat Party primary and won, then won the general election as a Democrat.
DontSayRepeat
Jeffries is not a democratic socialist. He is staunchly against it and had said so just in a last week press conference. Stop regurgitating Israeli propaganda, for fuck's sake. He ran unopposed because he took APAC money and ...instructed the establishment Democrats to vote down the primary against him. There were people that had him tooth and nail opposed, but they didn't let it happen, because he's in Israeli pockets just like the GOP. The DSA are not the same.
LurkingSarcasm
Personally I like to keep tabs on the leaders of the party that go against the party the moment they make a public announcement about it.
thanatos777
Jeffries is a scummy piece of human garbage, but he's absolutely not going against the party on this. The Democratic party doesn't support Medicare for All, or any form of universal healthcare; they support several half-measures, but the ACA (which is a plan written by a far-right think tank) is as far as they--as a party--are willing to go. I highly recommend you read their platform; the things that Democrats think the Democratic party supports that they very much don't would fill a library.
LurkingSarcasm
When I say 'party' I mean people, when you say 'party' you mean politicians
thanatos777
Like it or not, the platform is the party. The platform contains the policy goals the party is allegedly going to be working towards. Those are the things that voting for a Democrat is going to get you, at best. Telling people he's "going against the party" when going against M4A is misleading at best, outright misinformation/lying at worst.
1/2
thanatos777
If you want to refer to the *people*, you can talk about "Democratic *VOTERS*," but it is absolutely insane the things that Democratic voters think the Democratic party stands for that they very much do not, Medicare for All being one of the biggest.
2/2
GimcrackGewgaw
It will always be the case that leader of the House Dems will be a centrist beholden to money because that is literally his job. He is elected by the Dem reps because he delivers money they need to win races. He can do that because he is less radical than DSA. What the left needs is to find ways to work with that, to pressure him, but not to depose him. They'll never have the votes in their own party to replace him with a lefty. They'll just get a shittier fundraiser, which doesn't help anybody.
1stDrunkJoe
The US was strongest when it had a strong middle class. Just because the Oligarchs don't want to share doesn't mean we should feel beholden to them. They have become parasites but we don't have to be zombies. MAGA began as a grass roots movement because organized people are more powerful than money. Trump won in 2016 because people are tired of the status quo, despite the GOP leadership fighting against him. The difference is The DNC has never stopped stonewalling the progressives
medimr
"They can win races!" is not going to be the comfort you probably think it is coming from the assholes who managed to lose to Trump twice.
thanatos777
And both houses of the legislature.
beep0boop
What does that even mean? There are 435 members of the house. That means you need to win at least 213 races every 2 years for your party to maintain control. That's a lot of interests you have to manage
BrdCdn
Morons think it's a simple black and white thing. That because the DSA is popular in Urban areas that they should win in every seat.
GrandmasterSpank
The left has been 'compromising' with centrists like Jeffries, Schumer and Pelosi since Reagan and all you got is a Democratic party which is not firmly in the hands of billionaires and their policies are now more right wing than Reagans GOP during the 80's. This is what 'voting for the lesser evil' has gotten you. And do you know why Trump got to power? Because America is in a downward spiral because centrist Democrats dont fix anything so people vote more and more extreme HOPING something 1/2
GrandmasterSpank
will finally change. Trump is the result of Democrat unwillingness to change something for the better. And the DNC is unwilling because they get billions from donors who tellt hem 'dont change anything'. Fuck the establishment DNC. Kick em all out and replace them with people who WANT to fight for the common folk, people like AOC, Bernie, Mamdani etc etc. Politicians CAN do stuff if they WANT. But centrists like Hakeem do NOT WANT IT. Get rid of him ! 2/2
beep0boop
The left hasn't held power in the Democratic party until relatively recently. They finally realized that complaining about "both sides" doesn't do shit except let Republicans walk away with elections, and started winning primaries against centrist Democrats. Now they're forcing the Democrats to move left again, but that cuts both ways. Both parts of the party will need to work together to get anything done
GrandmasterSpank
You cant 'force' the DNC to do anything. People like Jeffries and Schumer would rather lose elections than to give into the DSA. They are literally sabotaging left wing Democrats to stop them from getting into power. They are giving information to the GOP to undermine DSA candidates. If America wants to survive they have to treat DNC coorporates like Schumer and Jeffries as collaborators to the MAGA movement, because that is what they are !!!
beep0boop
Bullshit, Schumer and Jeffries want the Democrats in power. That means DSA candidates beating Republicans. They'll get behind DSA candidates in the general election.
GimcrackGewgaw
Lefties excel at holding friends to a higher standard than enemies. We don't have to compromise with Jeffries, but maybe put him last in line for the guillotine instead of first. Or, you know, waste your time replacing him with a shittier version of him. That'll show the Republicans you mean business.
GrandmasterSpank
And what has that strategy brought you? Donald Trump got elected twice because the only difference between DNC and GOP is: DNC makes it a bit less worse. Great strategy !!!
GimcrackGewgaw
If you have a plan to replace Jeffries with somebody better, I'm all ears. Your plan to kneecap him for no reason is not an answer.
GrandmasterSpank
He's up for re-election in januari. This is the time to start a campaign to replace that stooge.
alex5775
Should.... should I not be holding the politicians I'm ostensibly voting for to a higher standard than a Republican id never vote for anyway?
GrandmasterSpank
Apparantly not.
beep0boop
Yes, in the primaries vs other Democrats. Against Republicans? Show up or shut up.
somebackup
Imo it's better to lose as a socialist than to win at this cost America has two right wing parties. One is just slightly less right and less bad
Rhythmaster
The thing is, the centrist "moderate" dems are the ones that keep losing. But any Democrat is still better than any republican, I know it doesn't seem like that right now when the dems have hardly any cards to play, but if they win the house/senate and presidency, they can theoretically do a lot of good things and block a lot of bad things. Maybe they won't do much, but the possibility, the opportunity would be there whereas if GOP retains control we know it will just be worsening fascism.
BrdCdn
No losing as a socialist and letting the GOP keep winning is not a moral high ground. It's pathetic. Vote blue no matter who morons. The time to replace Dems has passed. You can get involved and put the work in years ahead of the next cycle. Because that's what it will take.
mudstew
I suspect you don't have a strong grasp on how any of this works
BrdCdn
The primary for him already passed with no challenger. If you have him then get involved and support a candidate for the primary next cycle. Not enough people cared beyond bitching online this time to do it. So bitching about establishment Dems at this point is just doing the GOPs work for them.
FrancsTireur
People like you will forever be slaves to the DNC and their handpicked candidates. They can emotionally blackmail you so easily.
Do you not see that there is no incentive for them to do anything to oppose the GOP when its the GOPs existence that puts them in office?
So long as the GOP exists and things get worse every year they can fight every election on "Atleast im not them".
But at that point they might aswell be them because they're doing as much to help them as any member of the GOP. 1/
FrancsTireur
The blue no matter who movement was stupid in 2024 and its even more stupid today. We are fast running out of things for them to white knight about.
We are basically at the point where its "Elect me and I wont personally murder you or your loved ones".
Sorry but if you love your life that much, then you might aswell go get a MAGA hat and a complimentary pack of huggies because theres clearly no depth you wont sink to in order to save yourself. 2
somebackup
I understand the sentiment, though I am not entirely sure I support the argument. The whole point of the "moderate" democrat is to move both parties further and further right. Electing the right wing dem isn't going to help, it's just a slower creep. Maybe a slower creep is beneficial, but it also sends the message to dems that their right wing bs is accepted, when really people are just picking the less bad option. It's just the sad state of us politics.
BrdCdn
You guys haven't elected moderate Dems to a majority since the first but of Biden's term when alot of good things got done. That's a strawman argument. If you can win a primary with a DSA candidate that's great and I hope people vote for them. But now is not the time for infighting and refusing to vote for centrist/right leaning Dems during the general. Doesn't matter if everyone hates Jeffries. He's the lesser evil for this cycle.
somebackup
Centrists are a myth. Don't fall for it.
