#5 No joke, Steinbeck is such an consummate writer. A literary master. You read his prose and it opens your heart, shows you what is possible, explains human nature so sadly and beautifully. Not only was he technically superior to almost every contemporary writer, but the depth of his love for the human being speaks through every page, every sentence. It's devastatingly good. Books that changed me, and my understanding of writing.

The Hobbit party was certainly something. HUGE party, insult everyone, vanish, peace out to live in turbo luxury hospice with the cool kids. Tolkien had notions.

Ah, my 10th-grade English teacher. An absolute hack. Disliked Steinbeck, Mark Twain, and anyone who showed America in a critical light. Assigned us to memorize and recite the prologue to The Canterbury Tales. I memorized it in Middle English, which absolutely pissed him off. He told me at the end of the year that he'd never disliked a student more than me. I got an A+.

To be fair, I was, like most sixteen-year-old boys, not respectful of authority. Just like most 72-year-olds.

The moment that I was disgusted with my English teacher was when she said, "Where's it at?". And she was not being facetious.

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

Where was what at?

I have no recollection. I was so stunned to hear a sentence that grammatically incorrect coming out of an English teacher's mouth that I practically had to pick my jaw up off the floor. She and one of my classmates were talking about a new restaurant or something, I think.

Was raised by my Aunt, an English Professor, she’d be rolling over cringing in her grave if she heard that. I still correct myself all the time like she’s in the room…and never use a preposition at the end of a sentence! Hahaha!

Is your issue the preposition at the end of the phrase, or the redundancy? Either way, it's fine: https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=4125 and https://www.michiganpublic.org/arts-c4125">https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=4125 and https://www.michigultu">4125">https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=4125anpu">ultu">4125">https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=4125> and https://www.michiganpublic.org/arts-culture/2019-08-11/twts-where-were-at-right-now-with-wheres-it-at and https://boards.straightdope.com/t/why-do-people-use-the-question-where-is-it-at/847843/2 and https://www.grammarly.com/blog/sentences/end-sentence-preposition/ because spoken language isn't static and unchanging.

It's the redundant nature of the construction plus the use of "at" at the end of a sentence. I'm fine with a lot of prepositions at the end of a sentence, but there are a few that really should be proceeding another word. "Where is it?" Uses less space and means the same thing.
