Pepper, short for Peppercorn (because of the fur) was 18.
These pictures are a few years old; her health deteriorated sharply over the past year. She lost her sight, appetite and kidney function.
At 3pm Eastern today, she went to the vet for end-of-life treatment.
She fell asleep on the exam table and never woke up. Quietly, peacefully and with dignity, as she did everything in life.

Yeah, I'm truly dreading the point where this happens to me - my Cleopatra has been my great friend for most of my time in Victoria BC (she was a feral stray they only caught her because she wouldn't abandon her 4 little kitten) ...
...but that was a long time ago now We've had a wonderfully long run and she's been a great friend but she's around 17 now and is really starting to show her age... :P (she's lost a lot of weight, she has lots of long coughing bouts, trouble moving around...)

I’m so sorry. Peppercorn clearly lived a life full of love.
My 15 year old girl is nearing the end as well. We are going to the vet tomorrow and I think our vet is going to let me know that it is time. She was doing so well until a month ago. The only thing ‘wrong’ with pets is they don’t live nearly as long as we do.
