Additionally, you can replace the battery.

You can actually buy a special cartridge that you plug the original cartridges into - It serves as a Save Manager.

There's ways to save em. I've done a couple of battery replacements with old cartridges where the save was completely intact.

I'm sure it can be done, just wanted to warn the OP. Are they off the shelf batteries or are they Gameboy specific?

No you can buy them from stores or online. For the gameboys they're 3v coin type batteries size 2032. Often used for calculators and watches
