Definite Force Awakens spoilers in description.

Hear me out...

It seems that lot of the problem people are having with Kylo is that he came off as weak/not convincing enough for a bad guy. I don't think it's Adam Driver's fault, nor do I think Kylo actually seemed weak in the movie. Something was just lacking. I think that something was a lack of backstory in the film. We all have grown to know Luke, Leia, Han and the gang, but then things skipped forward quickly to this new generation. While anticipation builds towards a big reveal for Rey's identity and backstory, Kylo Ren's backstory seems to be in the past. It seems as though it will be minimally covered, since the plot must continue forward.

Yes, one might imagine in his/her head that Kylo was raised by Leia and Han, and even growing to know Chewy, who shoots him. However, all that is never shown. Nor is it entirely ignored. It's just left to the imagination, when really honestly, I think we could ask for a little more - just some scenes or something to show his early years. This may come later, but for now we're left with the feeling that they'll develop the rest of the plot (maybe they'll discuss the Knights of Ren and maybe we'll find out Kylo is really on the knife's edge of the force, trying to actually help the light side as Darth did with his dying compassion for Luke). It still seems like they need to focus on Rey and that they will focus on Rey for the upcoming films. However, they really could have added a bit more backstory on Kylo in this one, and it wouldn't have spoiled any of the next ones.

For instance, they could have had Han explain to the new gen. that Kylo was his son, and that he trained with Snoke under the dark side, meanwhile, they showed clips of him fighting alongside other Knights, etc. That alone would have boosted things.

I really do hope the next film does the character a little more justice. There's a lot there that can be worked with, and I'm just excited that the film wasn't actually a complete flop, like many films that are clearly for big companies to squeeze out every last penny of a good thing.

Edit- I understand that they're making two more movies. The point I'm making is that we're left with the feeling that Rey will be covered more in the next one, and that the plotline will otherwise move forward, leaving out some opportunity to show Kylo's backstory. Meanwhile, there was plenty that this film could have shown, without spoiling anything. Lots of people are hungry for it.
If one notices, Kylo Ren doesn't do much else in the film, but search heavily for that droid by different means, until he then fights off the resistance fighters who are working to destroy the star destroyer. It's very similar to Darth's first role, who had over 3 whole movies to explain his backstory. We're not getting that with Kylo Ren. We need to see more. We already know he's Han and Leia's son, so there's no affirmation that they're going to reveal any more about him getting to the darkside, other than what they said in the film (that he didn't train with Luke, and was influenced by Snoke instead). Even if they touch on this in the next film, there's no reason they couldn't do so in this one.
To explain my point further, understand this: Killing Han was Kylo Ren's final task to gain Snoke's trust. This is practically blatantly stated. But what about those other tasks? Why couldn't they have just shown those? (Even if he's doing those tasks with false intentions, as many suspect, they could still show him carry some out).
They set things up so that, if it is how everyone below thinks, then half the next movie will be flashbacks of Rey or Kylo, just in order to show who they are. That won't happen. We're not going to get our cake and get to eat it too.
Also, from the very beginning, when Christopher Plummer's character says that he once knew him before he turned to the darkside, that was a huge opportunity to show him Before He Turned To The Darkside! All that and more would have furthered the character development, without needing to ruin any plot of the next films. And, it would have assured us that Kylo Ren's story would be fully covered (without them needing a X, XI, XII in which they go back and Jar Jar it up again).

He comes across as weak because all you know is Ben was sent away... what you don't know is what happened with him and Luke

I think that's what they're going to do in the next movie. Do a paired flashback thing with Luke and Kylo.

isnt that what the second movie is going to be?

I honestly think we will get back story in the next movie.

Good thing they are making two more movies.

You know there's a full trilogy coming right? It's like saying you should've known everything about Luke from the first film.

Kylo is in the balance of who he wants to be. I get where you're coming from but there may be a whole lot more story to come.

...think of the good times while he was growing up. I agree that would be immensely satisfying

Guys you can't have every loose end tied up in one movie, there are more to come to answer questions. Just enjoy how good of a movie it was.

It's never expressly stated that Snoke trained him. We don't know for sure if he's the Sith Lord or not.

The original trilogy always had very little backstory in the movie itself as well. It's how Star Wars rolls.

and when we finally got backstory... It was the pre-quels... THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE ASKING FOR!!!

I know they tried to make him look weak, but he is like a 15 year old that screams at his parents, Vader should come back and bish slap him

Nah, Anakin and Kylo are the same, just no "sand is coarse and this place so pretty fam."

He looks nothing like his so called parents or any skywalker. he looks like they made a clone of Alan Rickmans Sheriff of Nottingham

I mean..he does kinda look like a baby-faced Anakin.

I do not see a single similarity. Not jaw, cheekbones, ears, eyes, nose, brow ... nothing but the hairdoo which is the wrong colour.

I suppose...maybe he was adopted.

I just dont like that they cast Adam Driver.

Who would you have preferred?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think maybe a new face as far as hollywood is concerned-- Like Daisy Ridley. She was a great cast and isn't tainted by previous work..

In my mind I mean. I just can't get Driver's irritating character from Lena Dunham's show out of my head. Its harder to take him seriously.

Yeah, he took off the helmet and I just went "huh." I found everyone on Girls irritating, just whiny people bitching about their problems.
