Late entry, but one of the best hard sci-fi books I've ever read, about first contact that goes all pear shaped. A pretty quick read that should be a movie someday.

Read it but wasn't memorable. Only recall the weird aliens... who turned out to be human offshoots. Rather see Ringworld.
