Very very remotely related I just learned that humming bird wings are basically the strength of wet tissue, closer to butterflies than other birds - resist the urge to touch, rinse, anything, unless you know what you're doing.

It's safer for the bird if their eyes are covered because it tends to pacify them so they're less likely to injure themselves struggling against you. They can also deliver a nice puncture wound depending on species. Don't try that with a Western Flicker like I did. It took 5 weeks to heal.
