Because (too many) people prefer being the product (ads) over being the customer (Emerald).
There is some inflection point where Imgur would make enough money from some magic percentage of Emerald Users that Ads become irrelevant.

I've been keeping score. Since the first hour, based on views, traffic and the 5 snowball limit, the algorithm that decides the team seems to be based on...waitaminit, I'm getting DM's from Pinecones...

I can see where you're coming from as I'm incredibly surprised myself to see how close the scores have ended up, however, we're counting every single one (well, up to 5 per post) and the only way the score increases is from people pressing the button

Makes sense. Why bother rigging something when you can just track button clicks. It's not really surprising that given a large sample size, it ends up close to even, it's just statistics. ESPECIALLY when you consider that a decent chuck of participants are going to be more motivated when their team is losing. It'd actually be far more strange if it wasn't close tbh.

Also the snowball button makes you automatically upvote the post you are throwing at... it is designed to drive engagement. Also look at how often posts make front page now as compared to any other day.

With how little effort goes into coding anything, I would honestly be surprised if they opted tomhave the scoreboard calculate the actual score instead of just having each side go up by roughly x per minute etc. There's zero way to know how accurate it is, so there's zero incentive to have it be accurate.
Snowballing auto-upvotes posts. It's an engagement boost for ad revenue.

It's a count of score pulled straight from the DB in realtime. We're counting every single one (well, up to 5 per post) and the only way the score increases is from people pressing the button. For example, I can see that you have thrown 225 snowballs at the time of me writing this comment

Those 225 snowballs are on ~45 posts. If not for the snowballs, I probably wouldn't've upvoted 43ish of those posts. Do you also have a metric on the engagement bump in the last 24hrs?
Btw, I really really really truly miss getting to do the secret santa. It was my favorite package to shop and compile each year.
