As the title says, I ended 7 years with my now ex fiancé due to the fact that my apartment became what could be compared to a nightmare episode of hoarders. Not even going to touch on the other things that led me to this decision but I know deep down it was the right choice to make. The biggest downside? She took my cat with her, it was pretty much a condition for her to leave. In just about one hour of work I removed 8 30 gallon trash bags of junk, garbage, and more junk, cleaned my bathroom, and I finally saw the carpet again for the first time in years. Still a lot of work to do, and then I’m going to adopt two adult fur babies who need a loving home. Wish me luck!

Id have gotten in touch with the landlord, taken ex off the lease then got the law to have ex removed and kept the cat. The only guarantee the cat is safe was with you.

I get how painful it is to lose a cat but that situation sounded nightmarish.

If she was a true hoarder, I would seek some therapy before entering another relationship. People aren't perfect, and if your next partner is a little bit messy, you might become triggered and react irrationally to a normal amount of mess.

Dude no get your cat back if she’s a hoarder then the cat will have to live in that too. (not pegging blame just in case, but an fyi in case you didn’t realize it at first. If the living conditions are bad in her place you can probably use that as a legal reason to get your buddy.

Where she’s going, that won’t be a possibility anymore, thankfully. If I had even a shred of doubt that my cat would go to a home that didn’t love her unconditionally, I’d have kept her here.

Maybe. Hoarding can grow from other issues, though, usually unresolved trauma along with a mental illness. Either way, OP is lucky to get away from it. (Source: married into a family with hoarders.)

My friend had an ex who was like that. Not a hoarder but a lazy slob with two cats who she let puke and piss everywhere. It was disgusting. I feel bad for the cats though. If you ex is that unsanitary you should consider reporting her for animal abuse in the future.

Going through divorce myself, I've hit over 30 bags of trash from her and her kids, haven't even got to one of the kid's old rooms yet, that'll be another dozen bags. I couldn't keep up cleaning it all and she didn't help cleaning at all, so it just accumulated. It sucks, but youre making it yours again.
