There's gotta be some weird psychology behind this. Like... they see themselves as the main character of some post-apocalyptic bunker fantasy? Do they fear the loss of their status/wealth such they want to eliminate most of the world so there's no competition? They want to ruin everything because they imagine themselves ushering in some new society, since they've never actually created anything other than strife and misery with all their wealth...and so on.

Realistically, I realize it's people with low empathy, a high degree of narcissism, and probably aren't very emotionally intelligent (except when they're being abusive/manipulative).....but also knowing the fantasy people so often spin in their own heads it makes me wonder if they have some kind of delusion of grandeur in regard to one of those scenarios, especially because a lot of their actions seem predicated on fear and self-interest, so they're probably deeply unhappy people already.

Yeah, they know what they're doing. This is them deliberately destroying the world we live in to make more money. Already been hinting that the world will basically have to pay them money to stop - ie, governments will have to buy the corporate assets that will become useless if we stop burning fossil fuels, like mines, rigs, equipment, etc.
I expect they have some kind of plan to monetize the scarcity that climate change will cause, so they get even richer.
