It takes 40 seconds for #1 to hit once it begins to heat up in the atmosphere (~100km up). Assuming its ice, (google says the deep impact meteorite was a comet) 11km wide. 8km/s impact speed of 420 trillion kg mass, equating to ~3.2 teratons of TNT. Not good, but people COULD survive it. Not quite 'fully cleanse the earth of life in fire' level.

Watching some of these, I got to wondering. For a "doomsday" celestial object miles wide hitting the Earth at incredible speeds, wouldn't that be enough to cause a massive earthquake across the entire planet? An earthquake of such intensity that it could displace people and objects where they stood as if Earth's gravity was nullified for a moment as the Earth shifts? Like, if someone was in a cave, and such an event happened, would their body be slammed/splattered against the rock?

These 'special effects' are why I don't watch Hollywood pictures. Nobody involved has the slightest idea of the speeds celestial bodies crash into each other. You'd Think they would consult some actual astronomer? But then the writers miss all the opportunities for dialog to fit into the entry scenes.

There's a thing in movies/shows where sometimes, reality is a lot more ridiculous than what the audience is willing to believe, or look a lot less cool. And considering the audience is rarely comprised of a majority of scientists, realism doesn't matter all that much.
If you want real stuff you watch a documentary (and even those exaggerate sometimes).

#1 that scene is complete bullshit. A comet that size would have completely wiped out a big part of North America. The amount of energy created would cause a seismic shock way way bigger than any nuke ever detonated and the amount of ejecta would certainly make the sky dark for years. The trajectory is also completely wrong. Earlier in the movie it heads straight for earth, then it goes in a straight line skimming the water and then it is seen much higher suddenly plummeting into the ocean.

For some reason people judge that film as if the Moon is a natural orbital body, which the film makes very clear that...it isn't. It's explicitly science-fiction.

I've heard and read that "Don't Look Up" is considered an excellent film by some, but even if that's the case, it seems too damned depressing for me to want to sit through.

#13 That was such a damned good episode of The Orville. They kinda treaded from Star Trek TNG homage to a real Star Wars feel in that one. Also, the shot of the Moon was creepy as shit.

It is an amazing movie, basically what if a comet came now while Trump and his billionaire buddies are in office. You can see how it ends.
The Orville felt like Trek from TNG-DS9-VOY era and I LOVE it.

Yeah, being a good movie, should make you feel something, uncomfortable is a something. But I'm with you, I don't need a movie for the lesson. Im not in that place, I need heroes. Same with my ex wanting to visit Auswitz. I just don't need more examples of humans being awful, I have enough.

I love how the expanse showed the meteor impact far more accurately. If a rock is going straight down. It's not gonna slowly show up and cinematically careen across the sky. It's gonna be damn near instant.

Aye. I’ve read the entire mainline series myself. The show does a great job refining some of the plot points and characters and creating a unique experience out of the books. But I guess it can’t be helped since the writers were involved.

Too much for me. I tried watching the show, but it didn't grab me before the twist so I didn't see it. Then people just KEPT talking about it, so I grabbed the first audio book. Put into a small depressive episode. Not just the subject of the twist, but the initial story of how the pirates spaced that guy.

if you are in orbit around a planet, you don't need fancy bombs. just go get some asteroids from the local belt and just drop them. kinetic strikes are just as nasty from orbit as any sort of nuke.
