There is a hypothesis that the Egyptian pyramids were first leveled with water before construction. Trenches were dug in bedrock and filled with water, then the bedrock was excavated to the waterline. Stones placed at that line would necessarily be level.

My mom was a vet. Had a small office (25x25' or so) built off our house. After the kennel floors were poured she sprayed them with the hose and the water went away from the drain. The concert guy said to put a level on it to check. Mom explained, again, that the water wasn't going to the drain. He sighed and asked to put her husband on the phone.

The grading of the deck of the pool is the culprit here. They didn't use a simple construction laser when setting the subgrade, allowing the finish grade to be skewed... Pool installer...

I've seen some of the DIY questions on Reddit and, while there are some inquisitive intelligent people on there, there are also a LOT of dumbass questions. Bless the commenters for being able to stay sane through shit like "the foundation of my house has giant cracks in it, how can I fix this on my own for cheap?"

If the deck surface is level, it may simply be that the tiles replied slightly crooked. If so, the pool and you can wiggle the pool slightly and because the tiles are attached with soft mastic, you can get them to lineup better.

the person saying it’s sloped for drainage is also incorrect though, right? because I can see three tiles to the left, above the waterline and only two to the right, where the stairs are… which would mean the left is high, and the right is low… so it would be tilting towards the stairs not the lowest point in the pool which is where the stain would be… or just really bad tile work I guess?

The pool deck is slopped for drainage not the pool itself. it was a bad combination of materials chosen. They went with small tiles for the pool and thin slabs for the pool deck. If they would have poured concrete for the deck they could have hidden the slope, or if they used thicker tiles or just a flat finish instead of tiles for the pool it would have hidden the slope.

The contractor isn't crooked, its just a bad way to install the tile. The concrete surface needs to be sloped to let the water drain, but they should have hidden it better by making the concrete lip thinner on one side so the pool tiles would appear level with the pool water. They lined up the tile to the concrete instead of leveling them.

So, real question: are there long-term maintenance issues to beware of if the pool deck isn't leveled properly? Foundation issues (in new construction?), indicator of sloppiness elsewhere in the build, etc.?

This often happens when someone drains their pool and has a high water table in the ground. The pool will pop or float then dirt settles underneath and the pool wont level out when refilled. It is advised to always leave some water in the pool when draining/cleaning to avoid popping.

Yup. Enough ground water will cause the concrete shell to float like a boat. Sometimes enough to break plumbing and even the deck

Huh....we just recently drained an entire pool to regrout the whole thing. No gunnite, only tile.
Also, apparently it was a salt water pool? Didn't know that was a thing, I'm not a pool guy.

1 of 2 things happening here(maybe both) either the tile was installed at a slant instead of level or the one side of the pool is sinking possibly due to a leak causing a void under the pool.

Every pool deck I’ve ever seen has a slant for runoff, and it’s always away from the pool and any adjacent buildings. 2cm over what must be several meters (5 or 6 my guess) is a really gradual slope. It could also just be a measurement error and the slope isn’t even in that direction.

The only problem I can think of is if it started out level, then it's on a bad or no foundation under the pool and it's going to keep getting worse over time. My property is topsoil on sand and if I just plopped a hot tub in the back yard it would basically sink into the ground over time as rain and frost lift and drain and move the sand underneath it.

I would think that the pool tank and surround weren't constructed level; there would be other issues if it leaked (eg cracks in the tiling).
