I've been a long time lurker, nearly a decade tbh. I don't post much, rather private overall. Anyways, last night around 2am, I was woken by a desperate call from my father. My mother was having a very hard time breathing. She was recently diagnosed with alzheimer's after about a year of troubles with cognition. Anyways, long story short, my father got her dressed and I rushed over. Had to carry her to the car. Vroom vroom to hospital. Dehydration and single-lobe pneumonia. Currently being treated with antibiotics, but they want to keep her for three nights!
Im glad she's there, and im glad she's getting care we couldn't give her. But here's where I need some help. 3 nights in the hospital is going to be billed as extensively as possible by the hospital, because thats how this fucking world works. And I have no practical experience with dealing with the Healthcare system as a government subsidized entity. BUT! I know I've seen several videos posted in the past few years that I've watched that roughly detailed how to appeal medical debt for a hospital that receives government subsidies.
Im just hoping someone can post one of these videos in the comments so I can have a place to start dealing with this debt so money can be saved for future care.
Any information that could help would be greatly appreciated ?

Thank you for the support but... I need some leverage against this established hospital. Im in america, we don't have freedom here. We are free to work and die thats about it. I hate this timeline. We are all worked to the point where nothing matters anymore. Your bodily autonomy is worth as much as ur lunch break. I haven't worked at a venue that dispenses lunch breaks ever. We work until we die. Eat the rich, none of them want you to do well.

Just on paper. The worst part is it only works if the person still has family to cover housing, fod, and care. Without that the person ends up homeless without supports. Make the person look alone though on paper, and the family gets the bare min help they need. As gross as it is, it is also the sort of thing best done sooner. If you wait and pay medical as long as you can the you end up in the same place but also bankrupt yourselves.

It is less necessary for some families but "had to divorce her wife while he worked/retired so she would qualify for medicaid" is not uncommon. By the time assets and home ownership or % come in it seems like families figure it out like someone who can fight with the hospital or find support, but yeah... 'had to quit my job and/or legally divorce to get Medicaid to be poor enough to get cancer treatment' is not just a meme.

I do not have personal experience but depending on your situation, your local library might have a contact for a free legal consult or you might find people or guides online to get started. I think the long way entry point is usually an inability to get insured or needing to be on medicaid (care is for over 65 I think) and working backwards for how to qualify. Hiding assets from debt collection might vary by state on what hospitals can do.

This might sound insane, but if you watch comments here there might be hints if what to watch for or what works.
