Need a Holiday?

Hi imgur! I just wanted to raise awareness about my awesome but extremely small and insignificant country, Malta. (Note: NONE of the images are OC. They have been found on the internet! Just pointing that out!)

Close-Up of the Archipelago

Left to Right: Gozo, Comino & Malta

Ghadira (aadeeruh) a.k.a: Mellieha Bay (Melleehuh)

One of the many many sandy beaches in Malta. This is probably the biggest. My home town (Mellieha) can be seen in the distance

Village Feasts (Festa)

Again, my home town's village feast. Village feasts are as important as Christmas in Maltese culture and every village must have one. Except you don't get any gifts :( It usually lasts for about 3 days and it's epic: Food, Booze, Late nights and Firework shows. Not to be missed!

Isle of MTV

^Yes, it's huge, and best of all, it's FREE. It happens every year and we get artists like LMFAO coming here just to perform two songs. It's epic! If you like parties, you're gonna love Maltese nightlife. Oh and yes, bars sell absinthe at about 2 euros a shot.

Game of Thrones Shooting in Malta

New Zealand raises Hobbiton, I raise the lands east of Westeros and the Great Sept of Baelor! Pictured is Daenerys' wedding with the Azure window in the background, a natural arch found in Dwejra (Dweyruh) Gozo. The whole scene was shot on this coast

Ned Stark's trial shot on Manoel Island, Malta. Honored to have had such a monumental scene take place in my country!

BEER!

YES! We have beer! Cisk (Chisck): Won silver in the international beer championship. I love beer, but nothing beats this Lager...

...except a good, strong ale. Blue label is by far my favorite Maltese ale. Tastes a bit like Caffrey's Irish ale, but a bit less creamy. That said, it is only seconded by English ales such as Newcastle ale and Bishop's finger.

A pale ale popular with English people. Amazing taste, but I prefer the other two.

Cisk Chill: think Corona Extra, but more bubbly and rich in flavor. I could drink this all day...Especially in Summer

Kinnie

Yes! Aussies love this! This tastes amazing with vodka. Seriously...try it out. Think of a sweet Chinotto, add a little awesome, and you get Kinnie.

FOOD!

Bigilla (Big + illa): Looks disturbing, but tastes awesome with crackers. It is essentially a dip made from broad beans, olive oil & garlic. Simple, but too good to share.

Pastizzi

(Pastitsi) tal-Pizelli (tull pee-zellee)/ ta' l-Rkotta (tull ircottuh): Pea/ Ricotta cakes. NO they are not those crappy pastry imitations you buy in your local stores. These bad boys are oven fried in thin pastry and they taste amazing. Yes, the shape resembles the female genitalia which has led to the creation of the vulgar Maltese term for vagina (pastizz).

Bebbux

(beb- buwsh): Snails. Oh you thought only French eat them? You were mistaken. This is a traditional dish served with aljoli (al yoli) shown on the side, made from bread, tomatoes, chili, pepper and garlic. How do you eat these? Why, with a toothpick to their faces of course! Dip in aljoli and enjoy. Not for everyone, but you should try before you judge!

Fenek Malti

(Feneck Mulltea): Maltese fried rabbit.....I think the gods dine on this dish every day. Oh man....dangerously good. Yes, we do get queesy killing those cute things...but it's totally worth it. A lot of countries cook this dish, but none do so quite so well as us Maltese. If you come here, do not leave without trying this first.

Lampuka

(Lumpookuh): Grilled dolphin fish. Now before you start pouncing on me, a dolphin fish is NOT a dolphin. It gets its name because it leaps from the sea like one. Ugly looking fish, tastes like the sea had an orgasm and birthed this plate of the gods. Got to admit, most Mediterranean countries have this dish, but the Maltese take pride in their cooking!

Qarnit fit- tewm

(difficult to pronounce the 'q'...think of the first sound you make when you say oomph! that's the sound of the 'q') (arneet fit tewum): Octopus in garlic. Oh man...this dish...THIS EFFIN DISH. This is the bomb. Hands down my favorite Mediterranean dish. Did I mention how amazingly good it is?

Prinjolata

Prinyolatuh: Stole this deliciousness from Sicily and made a variation of it. I don't know the exact ingredients, but it's made entirely from biscuits and meringue. This delight is traditional during carnival days (Yes we do celebrate carnival, but I really don't like the one we make. It's total crap compared to Brazil). Have gained a few pounds gorging on this cake :)

Qargha Baghli Mimli

(again, weird 'q' sound) (arah balee mimlee): Stuffed Marrows. In a fix wondering about tonight's dinner? Quick! Get those marrows, hollow them out, throw in mince meat, cover them in your favorite cheese, pop in the oven and enjoy. Deliciously simple.

Timpana

(Timp-anuh): I guess this would be a sort of pasta pie? Yeah sounds lame, but this is in fact one of the most popular dishes in Malta. Try to imagine a pasta dish similar to bolognese penne, cooked carefully and placed in a pastry, sprinkled with unicorn tears and placed in the oven. It will taste as golden as it looks.

Zalzett

(Tsal-tset): Maltese sausage. I don't know what they put in this, but it beats your conventional Frankfurters to pulp. Got to be careful though, it's usually filled with whole pepper corns, so bite it gently.

Hope you've enjoyed these! And hope to see you round! Always happy to meet imgurians in person! :)

Timpana is italian for "drum" and it's quite possibly one of the toughest italian dishes to make in terms of planning. But one of the best.

Excuse me for butting in, but the pronunciation in Maltese is different from the Italian's :)

No worries. I did not know that. I didn't even know the Maltesians (?) had their own language. Looks like a similar dish though. Mmmmm
