Ed O'Neill nails it. The guy is money in the bank. I even liked his short run as Joe Friday in the Dragnet remake. Put him in league with Tom Hanks and Daniel Day Lewis. It goes w/o saying his prototype iconic sitcom dad Al Bundy, but Modern Family exhibits his subtlety. A real journeyman actor.

The first things about my now husband that caught my attention were his cheeky but good-natured smirk and green eyes. What kept my attention was his confidence, the conversation, and that he felt like a safe space to be myself.

I walked into a room after a rainy new years eve with just my boxers (pants were soaked from the rain) on and put my leg on a table and started pelvic thrusting at a girl and a friend of mine while chanting, "You thrust your pelvis HUH!" She'd never seen duckman but still thought I was funny. We kissed later that night, and that was almost 20 years ago now. Looks are nice I'm sure, but personality matters.

Probably should have phrased that as And we've been together for almost 20 years now.

My wife, who is very controlling of every aspect of our marriage and life, said she absolutely loved how in control and in charge of life and situations I was before we got married, and wishes I'd be like that more. If you can figure out how that's supposed to work, please let me know lol

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She is scared. She wants help to control everything, but she can't let go before someone else is in charge and no one can get in charge because she can't let go. Gently but forcefully remove her from small situations you are sure you can handle and do not allow her to intervene. Try and tell me what happens. Or not. I'm just a random guy on the interwebs.

I am not handy in the slightest. I can destroy Legos trying to fix something made out of them.

But I can take a sack of fresh groceries (not boxes & packets) and feed you, and while it won't be gourmet, it won't be bad, either. And I rock the hell out of the "Be Nice, until it's time NOT to be Nice" approach to dealing with shitty customer service.

The things I loved about him had their flipsides too. He is hyper-independent, and avoidantly attached. He is also 8 years older. All that made him dismissive of me at times, esp. emotionally. We started having drawn out arguments, which hurt our emotional connection. I started a company, he insisted on running it with me, we ended up clashing more. After 6 years of being together, I couldn’t do it anymore. Been separated for 1.5 years and he doesn’t want to let go

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you made the right call, even if it's never easy to leave someone you love. Some of what you describe sounds quite immature, especially from an older partner. Insisting on running your company together seems particularly like a red flag. Hope you find the right person for you someday, and until then, I hope you have good luck with your business and many happy days.

A woman must have things done a particular way, a man must have things done so as to not waste effort. Taking out the garbage when you don't also have another reason to go outside? Madness! That's like starting the car and driving to the petrol station ONLY to fill up with petrol then driving home :P

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was supposed to be in the morning on his way to work. We could see the dumpster from our apartment. It was the only thing I ever asked him to do. He apologized since (he was a tough emotional egg to crack) and explained it was a latent upbringing thing. His parents were shitty basically

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All these incels getting lost in despair measuring their cheek bone dimensions and ratios. It's not about that at all. Women aren't attracted to men in the same way we are to women. Guys, do you remember when you were kids, how much you looked up to your favorite superhero? THAT is the feeling a woman wants to feel when she looks at a man. THAT is the feeling of female attraction. Admiration. Not for beauty, but for the whole aura of the person. Become someone worth admiring.

2 years ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 15

This is just a different flavour of generalised shite.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I THINK that's what attracts people to Star Trek characters. Beyond the fact they're usually conventionally attractive, is the fact that they are competent and try to do the right thing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can make her come 13 times on the 1st date, but that only lasts for so long. You need personality, and being handy, and having a proper job, and taking showers, and so many other things.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What…what kind of first dates do you think are happening?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's the thing: with the right tool (for less than $50), women can satify their own sexual needs. Most women (long-term) are looking for other things, to be honest.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Beauty isn't going to last. Do not use that as a major criterion for a match.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I think the issue many men find themselves in is in the shift towards dating apps where long-term commitment is not favoured and all that other stuff is invisible. Both men and women should be avoiding those at all costs and out there volunteering, pursuing hobbies, or whatever else to meet people in person so they can actually get to know one another.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

Yup. My sister suggested using a dating app to find a guy, but seeing how she used hers has put me off it completely. Incredibly superficial.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm to the point with dating apps I would rather stuff my testicles into the garbage disposal than log in ever again.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine had, for his whole profile: "Pleasant person seeking same. Not an arsonist." And he looked like a college professor with his salt and pepper beard. He is funny, kind, mechanically inclined, and so good to me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think that kinda proves the point. You had nothing to go off of except his looks, and you got lucky. The vast majority of men will not even be seen on a dating app and long-term attraction occurs beyond physical attraction.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Men can be attracted to woman from admiration too.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously trying to say not admiration of beauty.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s how I knew my marriage was over. He was always so big to me (physically he wasn’t big at all but he seemed big and sturdy based on personality and presence). I remember the day he stopped looking big for me and I realised then that it was over.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I keep trying to tell the fellas the advice they get from other guys for attracting women doesn't really work. They keep setting themselves up for the Male Gaze (obscene musculature, aggression, domination, etc.) when they should be aiming for the Female Gaze (approachability, charm, wit, safety). Yes, keeping healthy is important, but there are plenty of funny guys with dad bods who do just fine. Put on the comfortable shirt and have a friendly smile.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I try to give the same advice. Be a safe port in a storm, but this advice often needs more explaining so it doesn't get misunderstood as "be an aggressive alpha who punches perceived threats in the throat", but "someone that you can 100% trust to always be there to support you, and who makes your daily life easier". And I absolutely agree with the wit/humour as well (not the prank bro or being mean or sarcastic, but the kind that brings unexpected joy and dares to be silly). The Sam Gamgee!

Fucking THIS!!!! I honestly thought my husband was kinda goofy-looking when we met, but I fell in love with him anyway because he had PERSONALITY. He was funny and kind and smart and genuinely fun to talk to and spend time with. He's an electrician, so he knows how to help me fix stuff around the house. He's sweet to animals and kids. He's the first to volunteer to help my mom when she needs a new appliance installed. And his looks grew on me VERY fast once I saw what kind of person he was.

That... sounds like gender essentialism. Also, you look up to superheroes who are bigger and stronger than you, so this feels a bit like it→

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

→feeds into the old trope that women like men who are, like, stronger than them and dominant over them? Honestly this feels... gross. To me.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

As a man who is quite a bit larger and stronger than most women, I have zero desire to dominate anyone. Any guy I know worth his salt feels the same way. The desire to dominate is for weak cowards. Do you know what the most defining trait of leaders in animal packs would be? It's not dominance, it's the desire to take care of the tribe, to make sure everyone is ok.

Also as a kid I didn't look up to superheroes because they could dominate me, it was because I was in awe of what they could do.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay, but what does any of this have to do with your ideas about the differences between men and women? I think women are just as capable of being good leaders (and just as capable of being bad leaders, of course) as men, and I personally know women one could be "in awe" of for their strength and personal accomplishments. (As far as I know, all of them in reasonably happy relationships, too.)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do you find this gross? I don't mind saying that I won't date a man who is smaller or weaker than I am. This isn't a trope, it's how most women actually think and feel. You're also conflating male physical prowess with domination which is incorrect. Most women don't want to be dominated, they want to feel safe. Big difference.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I do find it gross. :/ If you like it, more power to you. I find this kind of thinking that tries to put men and women into boxes kind of →

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

→restrictive and inherently... I dunno, disrespectful to both? We're all human beings, we should be able to be flexible and unique and not →

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Although it is kind of disheartening to hear you say "women aren't attracted to men in the same way we are to women". Because it means the not-so-handsome guys have a better chance than the not-so-pretty women.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

To to be clear, I wasn't saying I think women have to be runway models to be super hot. I wasn't even implying that men go for pure physical beauty while women don't, just that men tend to be attracted to a different kind of thing than women. I think women want to admire a man, and I think men want to be with a woman who exudes femininity. Mysterious, playful, vivacious, fun, satisfied with life, CONFIDENT. Most guys would rather be with a woman like that than a model who is boring.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's true though. Not-so-handsome men can still be useful, charming, witty, kind, etc. There will be a woman out there who wants that. If you're a not-so-pretty woman, good luck. The world has decided you're an untouchable ogre.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Let me be real here... there is no concept of ugly woman. For most men, women are on a scale from 5 to 10, whereas the other way round, it goes from 0 to 10. The points are awarded for different merits, true, but there are many, many, many unfuckable guys out there. And for good reasons xD.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The unfuckable guys are ugly and horrible

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that's gender essentialist bullshit. :/ Men can be attracted to "not-so-pretty" women based on personality too. And women for sure →

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

→are not immune to physical attraction based on looks. I think cultural beliefs about gender encourage and exaggerate many differences here.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I experienced this sensation firsthand at college. One girl, just nice looking, but super awesome personality became infinitely more attractive to me than this other girl, who was gorgeous, but very intellectually non-curious, and she suddenly became much less attractive.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Absolutely. I'd pick the "nice looking" girl who is awesome over the boring supermodel any day of the week. I've dated models like that and believe me... the best parts of those relationships are very temporary. Once the initial thrill wears off and you settle into just getting used to them, it's just like dating anybody else, which means if they're boring, the whole relationship is boring.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Intellectual attraction is definitely a thing:) You're absolutely right.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's reductive of both women and superheroes. Batman is brooding, emotionally unavailable, and rich. Superman is a polite sweetheart with traditional values. Spider-Man is intelligent, quick-witted, and dirt poor. Different women are into all kinds of different men. Women who look to date don't give a shit about how "admirable" you are, because guys who get a lot of admiration often stray - just look at most celebrities. Most women just want to be treated nicely and feel safe, above all else.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Like, think about famous people who are widely admired by guys... Let's take Arnie and Dave Grohl, both pretty admirable dudes, both of them cheated on their wives and fathered children out of wedlock. Most women rather want to date a guy who genuinely cares about and respects them than a super cool guy who fucks around on them, hands down. They want an equal to connect with, not someone to put on a pedestal and admire. Exceptions exist, but since we're generalizing, this is how it largely goes.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Too many guys think that they have to become the kind of man who gets a lot of female attention, but that's just stuff you do for your own ego. You actually need to build the skills that make you a good partner to a woman, not just work on attracting them. The goal is a mutual connection, not dazzling someone with how awesome you are.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A problem arises however when people are telling young men who become Incels, that it is about there appearance etc. quite often. The brain is far from developed by 18 and it takes a lot for the young to be able to see more abstract futures.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you are honest and tell young guys that their dating issues are stemming from their shitty behavior and immature views, you lose your audience. Keep telling them that good women play hard to get, and the ones that don't are beneath you. Tell them they need to have ridiculous high standards in a woman's appearance to lower their chances even further. Give them bad advice and they get even more desperate and willing to spend money. If you actually solve their problem, you lose a customer.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My point was more so that during that age, men are not told often it's personality etc. A lot of times there first experience with rejection couples with pain, starting it all. I am not blaming either side in this, just that at that age that is what is happening to instill these internal issues.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most incels have gotten their heart broken at some point, usually in their teens or early twenties, no doubt. Just sad that nowadays so many people pray on hurt young men as a demographic and stoke the flames. It's hurting both men and women.
