Found this cutie while hiking today, she wasn't doing great (yes, I washed the ever living crap out of my hands after touching a wild rodent and clothes went straight into the wash)

She was just sitting in the middle of the trail, didn't move at all when my dog walked past her. Barely moved over the course of several minutes, wasn't walking straight when she tried to stumble.

So I scooped her into my pocket and brought her home. She did not resist at all.

She is very smol

I think she either has toxoplasmosis (she's not being bold though, just lethargic, but I'm not an expert on the disease) or was poisoned at the nearby construction site. Or maybe clipped by a mountain biker and has a concussion. No physical injuries visible but definitely not acting the way a healthy field mouse should be acting.

She's definitely not doing well but she is now safely tucked in a large container with hidey boxes and towels away from everyone with some snacks, wet q tips, and supervised access to water (none of which she has shown interest in so far).
I found a rescue about an hour away that will take her tomorrow morning when they open if she makes it through the night. Keep your fingers crossed for her!

EDIT: Sadly, Jeri died at around 8:40 pm PST. She did her best to hang in there but she succumbed to whatever was causing her agony. I'm sorry I don't have better news but at least she's not suffering and I can't think of anything more that I could have done for her. She died warmly snuggled in my hand, in the exact same way that rodents apparently die when you're holding them and I hate that I know that. Thank you all for the well wishes, she died in my hands warm and snuggled. I was already going to donate some money to the shelter for rescue pups but this has inspired me to dig into my savings to donate a little more to help the animals that can still be saved. If anyone wants to honor the very brief and relatively insignificant memory of a silly little field mouse named Jeri please send a few bucks, even $5, to your local shelter or rescue.

You want plague because this is how you get plague

I don't live in an area with reported instances of plague and I've spent a lot of time doing geology and camping in the boonies in areas with plague so I'm very aware of how to avoid it. Not to say I'm immune, but the risk seems pretty negligible. I appreciate the concern but I am not uninformed.

You were correct with "had", it was a flea I was able to kill as soon as I noticed right as I stopped the video. Good eye!

I found a mouse doing the same, years ago though! I took it to the only nearby conservation that was willing to take it, a raptor rehab.

they straight up fed that mouse to a bird, yo.

I don't think they'd risk giving a potentially sick rodent to their rehab birds, but who knows!

You're a lovely person, but it's always best to let wildlife be. Especially when they are in their own habitat (with a few exceptions). It could be this mouse is just at the end of its natural life. It would die, and another animal would come along and eat it. Circle of life and all that stuff

I considered that but based on the super close proximity to the construction site I'm worried she was poisoned and don't want that to spread. If she's doing great tomorrow morning I'll bring her back to where I found her for sure. If I was deeper in nature I'd have left her but this trail is through a lot of active construction and her injury doesn't seem natural.

Right. I should probably just mind my own business. No sarcasm. I say stuff like this and I know it comes across as preqchy know-it-all douchebaggery, but I can't help it. I have little faith in people to do the right thing. Long days and pleasant nights to you.

Of course, I'm glad you commented with good intentions of making sure wildlife is kept wild. I also get frustrated when I see people interfering with nature, but in this case I used my best judgement (not so say that I'm perfect or made the right call) based on what I know about the situation. Sadly, she didn't make it, which pushes me even more to believing it was poison which would have worked it's way through the food chain. But whatever it was she died warm and isn't spreading disease.

Not great, she is currently very dead. I posted an update a while ago (based on the timing of your comment it should have been there but I blame imgur not you). But she died in my hands warmly calm in a dark quiet room. :(

Oh sorry yeah mine lags some time, dang….. but thank you for your compassion I’d like to think it was warm and embraced in kindness you showed when it departed.

We all deserve to go like that.
