I start with very filtered water, so I have to add back minerals

Milling the grain

Milled grain

Didn't have a banana, so hand for scale

Heating the strike water

Transfer strike water to Mash tun

This is called "mashed in" where the grain is added to the water at a specific temperature

Hydrometer reading to check my efficiency, which was 78% today

Sweet, sweet wort (pronounced wert)

This grain is spent

Adding hops

Rolling boil

Previous beer, a Kolsch, going into a secondary, which is a step I normally don't do

Finished product for today, will be ready in 2 weeks

creativity

beer

Don't trash the spent grains! Give it to someone with horses or cows! Every time I brew I give it to a buddy that owns horses. They love it!

I just bottled four barrels a week ago. Made bread from the wort. Kudos to you sir. Nice setup.

I've never heard it called 'wert' before. Always 'wort'. Good fun though!

You were supposed to start 2 weeks ago! That Kolsch has a nice color though. Never tried that kind but it looks good.

BTW, kegged and started drinking the kolsch this weekend and I think it is fantastic. Probably a little too fruity for the style, but meh...

I'm impressed you use water so pure you have to add the minerals back in. I wish I had more than 1 up vote, good sir. Now do what I always

did, which is add 3.5lbs of sucrose to increase your ABV!

thats an awful suggestion.

It will add Abv but also make it dry like a hard cider. Only style I've added sucrose to was a Belgian tripel in the form of candy syrup

Or adding a certain characteristic to the beer. Like dryness in your case.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. But i think adding sucrose purely to boost abv is not good. I don't know. I just don't like doing it unless its for style purposes.

I've made dozens of batches and it's never given me any taste issues. It just lightens the color since the percentage of alcohol jumps up
